I'm sure this has been requested/suggested before, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while so I thought I'd bring it up again.
The way BYOND receives telnet connections now, it requires the client to wait for five or six seconds, then presents them with a message. Once they do, the connection is established fully and the game and client communicate as normal.
I've heard this is the method BYOND uses to determine whether or not someone's connecting via telnet or through BYOND itself. I don't know if this is true or not, but some alternative functionality would be lovely. It's a rather unattractive setup as it is now, and while I am grateful that BYOND supports telnet at all, it would be even better if it supported it seamlessly. I know this isn't really a priority issue or anything - the percentage of the userbase that actually bothers with telnet is probably a decimal of a decimal... but hey, it matters to me, and really... isn't that all that matters in the end? =P

The problem with the whole Telnet system is that it's a very OLD piece of the BYOND system, and changing it would require some work, probably something only Dan would understand enough of to actually change. Although I do believe Dan said it was there for a very good reason.
