and how is that to be done exactly? can you tell me how to disable screenshot-capturing (the simplest form of ripping)? can you tell me how to prevent kids world-wide from distributing their precious source-code?

BYOND provides a set of tools to make and distribute games, that is all. the staff only has control over what is in the BYOND source code and in the related websites.

no-one can remove your 'right' to rip- that is a moral or ethical choice. it's not some magical switch or law that can be turned on or off, much less enforced.

crying about something stolen from you that you likely don't have the right or permission to distribute in the first place is just pointless.

i believe only the owners of original material (not already copyrighted by someone else) have the power - and in some respects the obligation - to protect their creations. at some point, developers need to stand on their own feet and stop trying to get BYOND to implement 'crutches' that will eventually fail anyway.

So by the way your saying, for example: Windows should not update their security because its going to fail sooner or later because some hacker will crack it!

What he's saying is that he wouldn't blame Microsoft for prohibiting people with illegimate copies of Windows to get critical security patches.

What about the people who create original work? The only protection we get is to copyright all our work. For a starting company who has 0 to no cash its pretty hard.

Couldn't you just combine the Source code, with the rsc, that way there is enough binary to stop alot of people from making a really good extractor? Everyone says its very hard to make a source extractor so put the rsc inside there, so it would make it harder for them to crack it.

Those are my two cents.

The source is hard to extract because it's compiled, cooked down into a more manageable form. The same is not at all true of resources, which are raw.

The protection you get is more than that. Original work is easily pinpointed to the author, unlike Anime which has been handed from person to person.

If you see someone running around with your icons, you don't even need to do anything; worthy players will see that you're the original.

Otherwise, you could complain to BYOND Staff about the resources. They may be able to surpress the hub, warn the owner of the hub and/or ban the offender from BYOND.

For a starting company who has 0 to no cash its pretty hard.

A starting company? Hah. That made my day... err night.

hey, you listened to me :o.

And GOA may be loosely based off of naruto, but the icons are in no way specific to the series. Its mostly names and roleplaying structure that would have to change in order to remove its copyright infringement.

94.2% of people playing on byond are playing a fangame, stop treating the people who make these games like criminals. Theres actually very little besides the roleplaying element in a game that makes its own graphics anyway that makes it infringing on copyright, but these are fan games, they are little hobby projects made to be fun and not to be sneered at, all we ask as a community is that moderation take place to help protect people who are trying to make their own net dream, and not be treated like second rate developers because of it.

Also im curious about this:
http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

Hmm, does it seem logical that a tiny insignificant 2d stoneage byond project would be considered fair use? curious...

Actually that's semi-sarcasm. I'm in it for the procs, but world/rsc_password would do absolutely nothing to protect the resource file (as others have also pointed out): if you have the .dmb file you can easily deceipher the password.
