In RGB mode, I'd like for the mask background to be off. The dark gray squares can be disorientating sometimes.
You can just change the color of them.

What color can I change them to to make them disappear completely?

Pure black is it >_<. I'm just saying you could make them less gray, since that was one of the adjectives you used to describe the background.

I'd like to go back to where it's all 192,192,192 for RGB mode, since if alpha isn't shown in rgb mode, the dark squares shouldn't be shown either.

Just change the background color to say, blue, then flood the image with that shade of grey, then draw over ti and flood delete it once your done.
Though there are good workarounds in this thread, I support this feature.
