Can we please have a direct link to the zip on the hub page?

A hub page with a downloadable project (e.g. world executable files or source) has a URL configured in it that the pager downloads the ZIP file from when it's told to access that hub entry. He requests to have this URL visible because then even when the pager download/install fails, you could try to do it manually. As it is hub authors have to manually put the link in the hub description and update it, and not all of them bother to do this, too.

If that's the case then yeah, that'd be pretty useful, it helps eliminate those pesky times when you can't download a certain file, however I'm sure I could work out the direct url to the .zip without the feature, although it would be easier if it was displayed on the page.

Sometimes it's nice to download the game to send it to somebody, to upload it to your server, or just to hold on to it for later use. Unfortunately, the BYOND hub strictly uses the byond:// link to connect to the pager, which is annoying sometimes. A link to the zip that the author provides when creating the hub (which is then translated to a byond:// later on) would be really nice.

to upload it to your server If it's a Linux server, DreamDownload should do this for you. But this little issue seems to get in my way, don't know about other people though. |

Yeah, DreamDownload is a pain sometimes, and really just not necessary. Why the heck should it download games to ~/.byond/MyHub/Author/Game? Placing it in a hidden directory? And even then, I've had it download and unzip "successfully" with neither the game dir or zip anywhere to be found.
I'll stick with wget and a .zip, *please*. |

There are still people who prefer to have the raw URL of their zip files hidden from the public. If anything it would have to be an option for the hub owner to enable.

Why can't you just use a file uploading service? Why do they have to add a feature?
www.2shared.com www.megaupload.com You can upload to that and provide the link to whoever you want. Sure, byond zip fails and download fails are annoying but only the author can do something about the file. Can't even mention how many times I wanted to see how a feature was done, look up libraries and none of them download. Lame! |

Reread the explanations of this request, you didn't get it right, since replying with anything like "just use a file uploading service" here is completely missing the point, even though you've touched on it briefly in your last sentence.

Yes I would love this...
I'm trying to use byond on my portable hard drive so naturally the browser on other computers I plug it into wont recognize the byond:// protocol. |

I usually do kaioken, I usually do.
I was just trying to find a work around. I do know how annoying it is to have the download or unzip fail when you really want whatever resource it is. I just figured that if they use the file upload they can put the link in the descrip like someone mentioned in another post. Guess its a last resort kind of way around the problem. |

Thing is, the request is to have the URL the pager uses to download that hub entry's zip file after it's started from it (via a byond:// link) freely displayed on the page, so one can use it if downloading through the pager fails for some reason. And developers can already add this URL manually in the hub entry and some already have, so uploading to a file sharing website isn't needed, seeing as if you can download it using the pager, the file is obviously already hosted somewhere by the author. A lot of the time this is a BYOND Member's filespace, even.
What this request is for the link to be available automatically by default (with option for the hub entry author to hide), without the author needing to manually add in and update it. |

Right, good summary. Honestly I read all of that information but apparently my brain isn't working so, I will step out of the forums again until I have some ACTUAL helpful posts. Sorry again folks.

Though it should probably come with an extra option in the hub entry for the owner to hide the zip URL if he so wishes.
