okay thanks. Aah, I forgot. With the installation of the BYOND Software, you will receive something called a BYOND Pager. This is a program that allows you to add friends and communicate with them. In order for non members to communicate with other non BYOND members, you must buy a BYOND Membership. But please do note, you are not required to pay anything. |

So the download of the "SOFTWARE" is free though, correct?

okay, thanks.... umm, you wouldn't happen to know about the Warrior Cats series would you?

The download of the software is free. To create games is free. To play games is free (unless someone that has made a game themselves decides that they are going to charge you to play their game, but that has nothing to do with Byond, and is equivalent to paying for World of Warcraft or Xbox Live or what-have-you). To post on the forum here as you have done is free.
What you can, but do not have to, pay for if you want to is for a membership. This gets you a few perks, such as a blog, a little bit of file hosting space, unrestricted access to the Byond pager (as mentioned to you by Calus in another post). The main reason to get a membership is just to support Byond. The creators of Byond paid their own money for many years to bring us this great, free service, and it has grown enough that they had to do something to help pay the costs; that's where the membership came into being. I paid for a membership once upon a time and didn't really get much use out of the stuff it got me, and other people have continued buying me memberships since then. But I have heard some people that fully utilize everything a membership gives them say that, for all the little things they get, it's actually worth the money. Anyway, everything you have access to is completely free. There are no catches, no fine print, no hidden fees. However, there are things that you can pay for if you choose to do so, but you can't accidentally do something that you'll end up owing any money for; nothing is hidden. |
Everything is free, except your soul after you've downloaded the BYOND software. Thereafter, you are pretty much prisoner to BYOND for life.
I kid you not. |

Calus, you're mistaken. You can page your friends using the pager even if neither of you have memberships.
As for TC, everything in BYOND is free. Making games is free, playing games is free, paging friends is free However, it does have a 10$ a year membership thing you can do IF YOU WANT A BLOG ON THE SITE, or unrestricted pager access to page random people (but why would you want to page random people?), or want to have an avatar on the site or something. In order to show their support, some game-makers provide benefits to some players that have memberships. Don't worry, the benefits are not encouraged by byond, it's all community spirit so-to-speak, and none of the benefits are game breaking. Usually it's just a piece of clothing, or some ingame pet. Nothing that alters gameplay. So yeah, you can get the full BYOND Experience free for years without feeling pressed to spend cash. But don't let that stop you. |

From what I remember, you can even have a blog without a Membership as well, only not with all the fancy features, such as CSS customization (I guess), a Shoutbox, etc.

Calus, you're mistaken. You can page your friends using the pager even if neither of you have memberships. If both users are on eachothers pager, they should be able to page eachother. If only one of the users has the other on the pager, then no contact is possible. If that's not the case, then at least one of the parties has to be on the others pager. I'm fairly sure it's one of these two scenarios. The member pager also allows you to track where your friends are and join them in games. However, it does have a 10$ a year membership thing you can do IF YOU WANT A BLOG ON THE SITE, or unrestricted pager access to page random people (but why would you want to page random people?), or want to have an avatar on the site or something. $18.00 USD p/y for memberships. Perks include the Forum Avatar (like the white kitten you see next to my name), a blog at BYOND Members, send/receive pages from anyone on the site, 50MB of file space to host miscellaneous files, in-game benefits from developers who want to support BYOND, track and join friends when they're playing games, track and join games that are being hosted at random occasions and a few other things I've undoubtedly forgotten. The benefits provided are entirely up to the programmer. So the accuracy of this statement is questionable. There's nothing stopping someone from making game altering benefits for BYOND Members, other than actual good design philosophy. When making games, you're free to make whatever your heart desires. BYOND has no say on the creative process. However, BYOND is allowed to not allow you to advertise your game on the hub if it contains questionable material. That doesn't mean you can't make it, just that you can't advertise it here. But if you stick to the normal realms of games 'round here, this wont be an issue. I only know of two hubs that were suppressed for containing blatantly adult material. (but why would you want to page random people?) I do this all the time. Whether it's to follow up a question in semi-real time or to ask someone else a question. Being able to page anyone I need to at a moments notice has proven to be a very handy thing for me, it's generally how I've made most of my friends on BYOND. |

It's actually 20 MB of storage, unless you're 250% better than me :(

The 50MB storage space was part of a deal to entice people to buy memberships or renew their membership. It's no longer applied. Perhaps some day it'll come up again!

The normal pager lets you do that too, but only to your friends, which is what you said. track and join friends when they're playing games, track and join games that are being hosted at random occasions You can do that too without a membership, if you're friends. What's fascinating is they're taking away less of the perks of being a byond member while increasing the cost of a byond membership. It used to 10$ FOR A LIFETIME. Remember those days? |

When BYOND Membership was first introduced it was $15 for one year, and there were no multi-year or lifetime options. You might be remembering a particular game, since more games used to use the subscription system. I don't really see anything in the way of Member perks that were taken away, so much as some features that were made available freely to all users. Perhaps that's what you're referring to. But as I told Ham Doctor recently, we'll gladly entertain any suggestions that would make people more inclined to purchase a BYOND Membership. If you have ideas for Members-only features, by all means feel free to share them. Lummox JR |

There has been a great number of suggestions on the forums lately.
Such as having more control over a game's hub page and how things are styled and organised. What i'd like to see is an option to create all new categories, custom categories, for a HUB. Like you get Scores, and stuff. But add some custom categories where you can put information you define, blog style maybe. Like 'Blog', 'Favorite Screenshots', etc. |

The BYOND software is completely free.
