Okay on my account a 1 year membership was bought
on 05/04/10 yet it says in the "Status" that it is expired.

Well As far as I'm concerned it hasn't been a year so what gives?

and another 5 year membership was bought on 08/19/10
Also expired, yet clearly it isn't 2015 yet is it?

So can someone please explain why it says expired?

PS: I haven't paid for either one of these, someone else did.
Looks like you still have a membership to me. Either way, BYOND revokes memberships (and permanently bans them from buying more) if their payment is declared fraud on Paypal by the owner of the account.
The "expired" status means the order was started but no payment was ever made, and after a certain period of time it was closed. It doesn't represent a membership that was ever completed.

So if someone paid for a membership for me and never paid it would that get me in trouble? Because I honestly don't know who paid for any of the memberships.

That's a contradiction in terms. They can't both pay for it and not. What's happening is that the order record is created, but the payment step is never done. Therefore it is never completed and activated. It won't get you in trouble, and would only be a problem for them if they were in the habit of doing this a lot.
