Am I allowed to create an Assassins Creed RP Game?

Because I'm really confused I was just notified not to make ads about my game. But yet I see people making games for Naruto,DBZ,Bleach(Funimation) .
I'm working my way back through those ads. The rules of classified ads (as displayed when you go to make a new post) are pretty clear, it's just moderator enforcement has been sketchy to date.

So in other words? You cannot advertise games like Assassins Creed? Im really confused XD Sorry pretty new to the community. Dont really like to be social around the forums.

Not a problem. As you may have seen, BYOND lists your creations on the byond.com website, for other people to view / play etc. Because of that, the website is responsible for making sure it doesn't infringe people's copyright, even if it's just a game made by the fan of a series.

So in the Assassin's Creed case, someone obviously made that, and sells it. They might not like people making fan-games of their work, and may even want to sue people that do so.

BYOND can't (and won't) stop you making a fan-game of Assassin's Creed if you really like the series, but BYOND can't really let you make classified ads on this forum for it, or publicly list it on the website for you. That's why this rule exists:

"DO NOT make posts for projects which knowingly make use of another person's intellectual property without their permission."

I hope this clears up what went on, and why your post was deleted.

What if I change the name of my Project, and change the copyrighted material from it's game?

Well then it's a different project, surely?

Copyright deals with things like a close likeness, using of names etc. If you wanted to make a multiplayer game about holy orders in Jerusalem and their politics, that would presumably be fine. Having things very much like the Animus, the past/present sync thing going on or actual characters would presumably be not okay.

they did this with dragon ball z hu2 and turned it into cesltial chaos adventures

No, i didn't plan on using the Animus or any of that future-through past shit. But I did want to use that Eagle Vision system :(.

Ahwell thank you very much, this actually makes me want to get even more creative .

Basically you can make and host whatever game you want. However, there are legal issues when you infringe on other people's copyrighted material.

One thing I would do is write an email to them personally and tell them your planning on making a fan game based off their franchise. Tell them what your project is about and find out if they are ok with it. They very well might give you the all clear signal. On the other hand they might tell you that they prefer you don't use the intellectual property of their franchise.

When it comes to copying a game mechanic there's really nothing to legally stop you from borrowing a game mechanic from another game. Just make sure you call it something different. For example whatever the Eagle vision system is - I would say feel free to copy the game mechanic if you think it makes your game better, I just wouldn't call it the Eagle Vision System. For example, think of all the game mechanics that are copied from one RTS to another or one action game to another, etc. I've never once heard of any legal dispute from a game using "fog of war" in an RTS.

Keep in mind too that when it comes to intellectual property rights there isn't always a black and white line, but often exists in shades of grey. In the end I really don't think you need to be worried about being sued, especially if you under the legal age. What you might have to worry about is your ISP refusing service to you and refusing to host your server because of cease and desist letters they might get from angry copyright holders if you use their intellectual property without their permission.

I think one thing that might help is if you put something in your game and a person who had a major role in develop Assassin's Creed can look at it and say, "Hey! That was our idea." So if your using a character, original location, original backstory, specific names, etc from the Assassin's Creed franchise then you are probably infringing on intellectual property rights. However, as I said before these things come in shades of grey. Simply borrowing a game mechanic most likely wouldn't result in any sort of copyright infringement. If they wanted to protect a game mechanic they would actually have to patent the algorithm they used.

However, most likely they wouldn't patent the algorithm for a game mechanic because as soon as its patented its available for everyone to see and then all a person has to do is change one little variable in the algorithm and suddenly they are no longer infringing on the patent. Since their game mechanic for the Eagle Vision System is based on an algorithm for a 3d engine and yours is based on an algorithm for a 2d engine they won't look anything alike in terms of code. The only thing you would have to worry about is calling it the "Eagle Vision System" because it is the NAME that is most likely protected.

If I could put all this into a single sentence it might resemble something like this: Don't take credit for something that isn't your original idea.

Alrigthy then, thanks, changing a few things as we speak.
