You know how some engines have basic, free art? It would be cool if Byond had that. You know, anything you'd need in the basic RPG. People, swords, guns, grass, sand, snow, caves, etc. It'd just make everything so much easier...and people would be more inclined to push forward with their projects if they didn't look like crap. What do you think?
There are some free resources in the BYOND Art Society, but that's about it.
I can agree with this. It would be nice if BYOND put forth a portion of out membership money towards hiring a professional to make some basic pre-made icons for BYOND. Or even take up a collection or donations from this purpose. I am sure there would be a lot of people who are interested in donating or helping out with this.

I believe RPG Maker calls it's package like that the "Runtime Package" containing music, art, and stuff that makes it easier to make games.

I think it also reduces size of the resources because it's built into the program, or something.

No, no, no. I'd rather their money go to improving BYOND as a whole. If we need art assets, we have charas-project, several tilesets and etc, and other places to look on the internet (for free art, that is).

Not only would an artist more or less destroy the income pretty quickly, but who's to say what exactly we need? Everyone makes different kinds of games, so everyone would be saying 'hey we could use this this and this.' It would be a never-ending request for art.

If anything I think it'd be best if people from the BYOND Art Society would work on something like this for the betterment of BYOND rather than for monetary gain.

As if that would ever happen.

The problem is that most of the artists on there don't have the skill to match one art style so if they did do this the icons wouldn't match each other. The skilled enough artist to actually do this, aren't around BYOND much anymore, or so I've heard.

I don't really see this as an issue. First of all, if a donation is taken then the money from memberships are not affected. if a small portion of memberships is taken such as 1 or 2 dollars per membership, I don't think this would affect the progress of BYOND. Not to mention if the membership cost was raise 1 or 2 dollars then again, it wouldn't really affect anything.

That being said, It would not go to an artist we all have access to. Similar to RPG maker. I would assume that heads of BYOND would get together and compile a list of icons that would be needed to make a game. generic monsters, generic base icons, basic tile sets to make houses and back ground scenery, Probably different planes such as desert, grass, water, mountain, arctic, etc. And then generic magical abilities fire balls, water balls, teleports. Generic Armour and weapons. And of course interiors for homes and buildings. Generic monsters, etc.

These would be the basis for any game. You can pick and choose to use whatever you need, and whatever you don't have you can commission others to make. or find online. This I would think is best. It is completely generic, and fits many different types of games. Those games that don't fit within this pattern can still commission icons to be made for them from other places.

Not to mention if BYOND did this similarly to how RPG maker does it, then once every few years they could come out with a new better set of icons. Including new and even more icons than the first. Of course they would also have so many years to collect money to pay for these generic icons, so over the years people can request the icons they would like to see in the new set and the BYOND staff when it is time can choose what to add to the new set.
