Quiz time: How much do you think a rich business person would realistically buy BYOND for, hypothetically speaking?
|
Educated guess, based on the suggested income being low and other software rights being purchased over the last two years? A lot less than a million, a little more than thirty thousand.
Depends on how stubborn Tom is and how much the 'rich business person' has and wants to spend for the software rights. |
The highest I thought was about 50k so I guess you're right. 1 ton of ramen sounds some where near 100k.
|
im sure tekas already given more than 50k to byond so that cant be the price of it.
|
Nothing, if Tom cares more about his Passion than money.
We already know what the rich do: Buy their way through life without having the ability and promptly ruin anything they touch by making it cheaper so they can pocket more money for themselves. Greed is an evil thing. |

I don't think anyone would realistically do so. The software's a bit dated and it's architecture is in dire need of a revamp.
They would probably have more luck hiring someone to write a new game engine. A little more costly but probably more effective in the long run. |
I think if someone offered to buy BYOND for 50k, Tom would at least have to seriously consider it. That would fuel other projects for a while and may actually give him the gumption to start over on something more modern.
But personally I think BYOND and the community has grown so attached to Tom that if he loosed the reigns, everyone would throw a shit fit the likes of which BYOND has never seen before. If something like that ever happened though, I think we as a community should be supportive of Tom's interests, whatever they may be. |

That is a poor persons yearly earnings. There are some people who cannot be bought, their passion is priceless. I am one of those people but it is mainly because I do not care about money. |
BYOND's always been walking the monetary tightrope. Tom has a life outside of BYOND too, but 50k isn't poor earnings, no matter where you live. It's a pretty solid number even for some of the most expensive living areas.
I wouldn't put it past Tom to turn down any offers though. I'm well aware how many years he's been working on it. Anyways, this entire thread is pretty moot, being as a situation such as this is highly unlikely even under the best of circumstances. |

I WISH 50k a year was considered poor because then I'd be making that. LOL True that. I bust my ass 40+ hours a week, plus commission to get 45k annually. |
50k is about what BYOND pulls in yearly recently, Tom said it was around 46k. So a 50k offer is something that is considerable seeing that it pays a year's revenue in one lump some, but I would say 100k starting offer on my end. That way Tom pulls in twice the years salary, if he pays Lummox a cut is up to him if Lummox wouldn't be employed after a buyout.
I firmly believe anyone's passion can be bought money isn't going away anytime soon. People just won't admit they can be bought out, or they will conjure an "insane" amount to "try" and prove me wrong. |
Sorry my perspective of a value-less currency is somewhat skewed, even a trillion dollars means nothing to me because it has no actual value.
Didn't really mean to offend anyone, just 50k to me isn't a lot (and I am not rich in any facet). I don't like "selling out" either, no matter the petty amount. |

Someone doesn't have bills to pay, people to care, tend, or support for, or responsibilities that would require cash in some form in any country.

So 1-2 tons of ramen noodles should be enough.
