Note: I'll update this post with any revisions between now and the official start date. After that, rules are locked in stone.
Time Frame:
- Starts Now
- Official Rule Lock Down Date: 6/10/2013
- Deadline 6/30/2013 at midnight pacific time.
- Judging will occur that following week and results should be published by the following weekend. No set time so be patient as it is a major holiday week and weekend.
Payouts:
Total Prize Pool: $160
1st - $60.00 & 2 Year BYOND Membership
2nd - $25.00 & 1 Year BYOND Membership
3rd - 6 Month BYOND Membership
Note: If you prefer cash over the membership, I'll give you 50% of the membership value in cash.
Submissions:
- Send your final submissions via packaged source .zip to [email protected]
Rules:
- The core part of the game must be based on mazes which is a network of paths and/or hedges designed as game.
- A game that has a maze isn't enough. Mazes must be a constant aspect of the game. You are entering a maze, navigating in a maze, or exiting a maze at all times.
- Must be made using BYOND
- Winners must accept paypal payment, Steam Purchases, or BYOND Memberships. Failure to accept one of these methods of payment will forfeit any and all prizes.
- Project must be submitted as a world source project in .zip format. This contest is a front for experimenting with incentive systems.
- Project must be submitted within 24 hours of the deadline.
Donations:
- Anyone contributing 25$ or more to the prize pool will have access to the source code via DropBox.
Judging:
- For every 25$ donated, the donating member will earn the right to vote. Donations will be accepted for the duration of the contest.
- Judges will submit a list the top best mazes equal the number of prize places we have. With 3 payouts, judges will submit their top 3 mazes.
- Judges may use whatever logic they want. Their judgement will not be judged.
- A summary of the votes will be posted.
Notes:
- Existing BYOND projects (published or not) are allowed as entries.
- The contest is all about creating something fun and entertaining.
- Entire purpose of choosing mazes is to lower the entry level. How much creativity and skill you put into it after that is up to you.
- Depth, Size, and scope are up to you.
- Objects, content, challenges, and etc in the maze are up to you.
- A maze is not a labyrinth. Labyrinth's are out. See Q&A for more details.

Q&A:
Q. Have you done this before and did people get paid?
A. Yes.
Q. Can it have more than 1 exit?
A. Yes
Q. Does the exit need to preexist?
A. No. As long as the players objective is to find the exit, it can be generated based on events and actions such as drinking a potion to reveal the exit.
Q. Will you payout in BYOND Memberships and Steam Game purchases in addition to PayPal.
A. Yes.
Q. Is a labyrinth acceptable?
A. After careful consideration, I've decided that it is too different from a maze. It's a single path into the middle and the same path back out again. It's more like a gauntlet where the player must stay alive to reach the middle and stay alive to get back out. It has little to do with "finding you way out".
Q. Are teams allowed?
A. Yes.
Q. Are libraries and existing source allowed?
A. Yes, provided it's all legal to use and freely distribute?
Q. Can I post my entry on the hub before the contest ends?
A. Yes

My reasoning was it's not really worth the time investment to make a nice game for your competition. My first thought when looking at your prize distribution was, "Well, I don't have the time right now to make a game polished enough to snatch first place." That's a $100 difference between first and second place, I would be awfully disappointed to lose to someone who put in just a little bit more effort. Everyone else who enters, no matter how good their game is, receives nothing for their time. I think a $75, $50, $25 spread would be best. If you get donations you could even add a few $10 participation prizes so everyone who enters at least gets something for their time. That way more people are rewarded while the top prizes are still beefy enough to entice developers to put in a lot of effort. |
Understood. Its open for discussion until lock down. I'm not overly concerned with the distribution as long as the majority of people are happy with it. After posting, I realized that I should have offered some of the awards as memberships to help support BYOND at the same time. Let's see where we end up.

I agree that 2 months is a lot but at the same time, this gives you the chance to create a game whenever you've got time or even in the last 2 days remaining and sending it. It's not really THAT BAD.
