Pretty sure it has like 42/201 of the games live on byond all with different stuff on them.

Act like you have one game up.
Well see there are two or three popular branches, some of which have multiple servers because, get this, BYOND can't actually handle more than like 30 playing at once, and even that becomes horrendously laggy.

That's more than any other games on this platform have.

Having 372 players whose only interaction with BYOND is to download the old Pager also doesn't count for shit.

Now. Due to ripping other games have died.

Only monkeys play that game >.<, I think it was page 2, where the topic became BYOND vs SS0.1, nonetheless, I agree with the guys suggesting kick starter. Its free advertising and potential free $$, I fail to see the reason not to go for it. Or even a variant of it

Maybe that's because BYOND literally has nothing else of value to offer?
A kickstarter certainly wouldn't be a bad idea.
Also this 'byond vs. ss13' argument is getting really dumb, really fast.
In order to do kickstarter, we have to be selling something that people invest in, eg "we will rewrite BYOND for Ouya and you can preorder for $10". But I have no interest in doing that. I don't want to rewrite BYOND.
Wow this thread turned into BYONDers vs SA Neckbeards really quickly.

Don't misunderstand, I have no vitriol toward the developers. Just the product. The same way I hate the VxD driver model and visual studio 6.0. It's just a piece of code, I could probably never build something like this if I spent the rest of my life on it.

My opinion stands.

Here's an example of the level of support I'm complaining about: http://www.byond.com/forum/?post=114133

Maybe Lummox doesn't have access to the code to look up that error and shed some light on the situation but he doesn't even make an effort to address that issue, in that thread or any other related to that error message. There's no live debugger. There's no way to see what's going on under the hood. It's very frustrating to try to solve a bug in the dark with no flashlight.

Anyway, I do apologize for leeching off your hard work. Wasn't intentional.

Anyway its late i'm out
MagicMountain:

That's understandable, but please realize that when you say things like "the engine is shit" it is just a tad bit insulting to the developers who have spent a lot of time trying to make this shitty engine. We may not be the smartest programmers in the world but we're not idiots either and our biggest fault is probably tackling a project that was far too ambitious for our manpower and finances.

Lummox JR can be blunt and snippy at times but he works very hard for not all that much money and I'm sure he gets frustrated like the rest of us when bugs crop up without enough information to reproduce them. In that particular case, what we'd like is some sample DM code that can cause that to appear because it is a very general reference error in our memory management system. Presumably it is coming up enough to warrant a report so that is something we'd like to see.

I sent you a page regarding the server.

Anyway I stand behind the decision to cease work on BYOND, even if it means the end of BYONDPanel.

You've gotta do what you gotta do, and in this case, it sounds like the best/only option for BYOND and it's developers, although it's sad I for one was expecting it sooner than later.
I'm pretty blunt and snippy too, I guess.

I haven't been able to reproduce that message either. Part of the problem is understanding so little about what it means. I've tried setting up some things based on what I think is happening but I never see the error when I'm trying to see it.

My assumption, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that it's trying to free something and it finds references. All the references are set to null in the delete operation to prevent bad pointers. Doesn't the memory manager know what it's deleting? It counted the references, doesn't it know where they were? Does it know the type of what was deleted? It would be much easier to find the source of the error with more details in the message.
Though Flash would be nice, I really don't care if any new features are added at this point; BYOND does everything I need it to. Maybe my standards are low, but I also don't give a shit about either pixel movement or 3D. Then again, I'm not a professional game developer. I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing regardless of new developments or lack thereof.

When people come out of the woodwork to complain about the engine and say that all games on that engine are shit, but simultaneously hold up the only game that they play as some sort of ideal, I'm left scratching my head. I played Space Station 13 a long time ago. It was alright, but even for the particular style of gameplay, it wasn't the best of its type on BYOND. (Murder Mansion pulled it off MUCH better). But if all of its players suddenly left, I don't think many people would notice since most of SS13's players have no interaction with BYOND, which is unfortunate.

Rather than saying BYOND owes you something, that you hate it because it doesn't do exactly what you want, how about saying thanks for the platform that is the reason SS13 exists at all?
MagicMountain: I'm not sure as I am personally not all that familiar with the memory manager (Lummox JR is more so) but I have made a note for us to investigate that as I'm sure, at the least, we can provide better debugging output. AFAIK it does not come up all that often.

Gakumerasara: Thanks. I don't have a problem with people complaining about BYOND; mostly I just want them to understand that it's just a very big project (that we probably made bigger than necessary with website foo etc) and we have done what we could to maintain it. I just don't see how calling it crap helps anyone. Also, I would argue that it most certainly isn't crap and that anyone attempting to port their game will understand that as they encounter the same problems we have (and realize what a pain in the ass it is to do this as a platform rather than for just one game).
Well people complain all the time, can't satisfy everyone, some people are just ungrateful.
My advice is ignore the ungrateful ones, the ones that rant so much about byond sucking etc, personally byond is fine to me, even if it's flawed, but that's life, nothings perfect. LOL
Have you considered http://www.kickstarter.com ?

Maybe list some features-requests/bugs to address, and set multiple fundraising goal levels.

Assuming you can stir up enough excitement, I think you can raise the funds you need.

I can probably get it stickied on the TGstation forums/wiki, which would account for a big chunk of the ss13 community. I'd hope other communities would do the same.

I'd just add, you really need to stay positive, and people here need to stop being so dramatic. It scares people away from getting memberships because it creates this illusion that byond is gonna vanish tomorrow and leave them out of pocket with a defunct membership.

Anyway, you guys have done a good job so far, I don't see why that can't continue. :)
