I usually use gimp, but I just found this and was curious as to something that I've seen a few tutorials do, I've seen it done with gimp, photoshop, and loads of other imaging tools.
The feature I am speaking of is the one where say you have an image, they will draw a color over the top of an area everywhere, it looks like on a new layer, and then somehow when they remove that layer bam the under layer has shadeing or the such.

I am looking at a few things but from what I see it appears to be the same thing, for the most part, as if you used a wand, or auto select of some kind, and bounded an area, which then you moved to a new layer and drew on that new layer. I am not seeing any tutorials explaining some of the things I see them doing, but yet the image still comes out correct.

This is an example. She uses the mask to set up for where to draw. She has a liner around the thing, and when she goes to color the mask she doesn't bother to avoid the line. However, the line does not get effected. If I try to do this it covers the line up. | |
But it doesn't effect the outline. Why?

What? I cant get this to work unless the layer mask is a layer above original otherwise mask doesnt show
