Just a couple weeks ago, I opened up a free email account with an online mailbox provider. I have told exactly one person this new email address, and -- in fact -- only opened this email address specifically so I could receive a file from this person, since said person's domain seems to be blacklisted by my ISP for file attachments.

I checked this inbox today because I needed to receive another file from this person, only to discover three spam email messages. Again, this was a brand new email address, never posted to the internet, transmitted to only one person via my personal email address.

I'm now inclined to believe that email providers deliberately pay non-soliticited advertisers to make spam in order to make it seem as though their spam filters are actually doing something.

I might be onto something.

I know, the more likely story is that someone in the company got paid off to hand out a list of new email addresses, but my theory is better. It also has tigers.
I can think of several other possibilities.

Depending on the name of the account, it might be possible that spammers are using software to generate "likely" account names. It'd have a low hit rate, but then, sending spam is free.

It's also possible that your contact betrayed you... or that the spammers are sniffing your packets and/or reading your mind!

Reading your mind is most likely. The spammers and the Soviets have teamed up on that one.
I agree with Gug on the part that they are using software to generate account names. It has happened to me on an old account also. I opened my inbox and had 350 new mail, all from accounts that were similiar to mine.

Tigers! I'm going with your theory then.
The spammers and the Soviets have teamed up on that one.

Damn Russians!

You are halfway there; if only you knew the terrible truth! But that can never happen as the alien piloted UN helicopters would come after you if you ever deciphered the true meaning of MSN.com using the back of a dollar bill. Just remember that a refined metallic reflector system should deflect most transdimensional mind alteration frequencies.

So, Put tinfoil on your head and call yourself safe?
Tinfoil is of inferior quality, unless it is lined with Teflon. Be careful who you buy the Teflon coating from, however... they are watching all purchases of Teflon because they know that it is the one true defence.

If you take the red pill, I can show you just how far the rabbit hole goes.
