When a client reconnects to a game via .reconnect or through the Options menu, they are greeted once again with an advertisement. For those with bad connections, this isn't really an optimal experience. Is this intentional? And as I have not yet had the chance to test, is this the same for link()?

What he said.
This is intentional and it should happen with link() too (otherwise people could just game the system). Is it really a problem? I'm basically banking on this as a revenue model since we are making next to nothing as-is and not only is the ad-revenue something, but it seems like a decent form of nagware. Obviously I don't want to alienate developers but it doesn't seem that bad to me (it's very comparable to what we see on flash portals). I wouldn't even mind sharing ad-revenue if it weren't such a pain in the ass to setup. |
He has a name Tom. :P
I think revenue sharing is a good idea actually, permitting it's an easy task to setup, the developer might not feel as annoyed that his/her players are complaining about it. On that note does NEStalgia have ads? is Silk happy with that? I would like to see a fee to turn them off for the developers players. |
All games that run through the pager use ads-- it doesn't know anything about the game it's connecting to. However, the standalone does not use ads. For that reason, I am thinking it is best to just sell that as a one-time fee, like maybe $100 or so. Some games (like NEStalgia) revenue share their subs with us so we just make an exception. Obviously for bigger games it is in our best interest to have people connect through the pager, but I'm hoping that some of the new changes we have there will encourage its usage anyway. I'd love to just let anyone use an adless standalone if they desired, being confident that most would use the pager regardless. We'll see how that goes.

It's not a bother, I just wasn't sure if it was intentional. And I wasn't aware of it's exclusion from standalone games. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to sit an wade through the updates. Honestly, I just click through and browse the ads when I'm on smaller sites, just to try and help with revenue.
P.S. Hopefully, I'll have the spare change to renew my membership soon. I always feel naked without it. |
What we can do (I don't recall what the behavior is in our beta right now) is only show ads for situations where the UI changes (meaning a link to a new game)-- links within games of the same type would presumably be parts of a continuous world and we want that to be as seamless as possible (although this has never really worked right).

I don't think it's a big deal. The ads only run a max of once every 5 min and they are like 15s long.
We will be providing the standalone tools so that power devs can always run ad-free versions of their stuff if it's absolutely necessary. I don't think you guys understand the gravity of our financial situation. This project is going to go under unless we make some money from this. I will explain it all when we release. |
I don't see anything bad with it, if they have a bad connection in the first place how are they playing your game? an ad doesn't use much bandwidth.
