Breeding is essential if you want to edit your creature. You change it every time it goes to a 'next generation'- I imagine then, that creatures have a lifespan and can die from old age.
Watching an older Spore vid they mentioned you could set up entire planets for experiments involving interbreeding of species, so I assume you can. |
Breeding is essential if you want to edit your creature. You change it every time it goes to a 'next generation' Yeah, I know that much, but so far, the only breeding we've been shown is between members of the same species, so I'm wondering if cross-breeding is even possible... I imagine then, that creatures have a lifespan and can die from old age. Interesting deduction... I'd bet it's correct, too... Especially in light of the part in the recent video that shows the hatchlings, which Will (should I call him Mr. Wright?) says are generated by the computer as a "caricature" of the adults... I'd imagine they grow up over time to end up in the proper form you've designed your creatures to have (which would then suggest that they'd keep aging past that, and eventually die)... Watching an older Spore vid they mentioned you could set up entire planets for experiments involving interbreeding of species, so I assume you can. Oh yeah, now that you mention that I think I remember that one, too... So I guess it will be possible... It'll be great to create all kinds of really diverse things and see what smacking them into each other will produce...lol |
Speaking of slamming creatures together:
Creatures 2 had a device known as the "Gene splicer", that used two species as donor genomes to create freakish, bastardised offspring. Yeah, it was fun. Horrifically unethical, but fun. The way the children look like deformed versions of the animals you design is a nice touch. To be honest I will probably never get my species space-bound. I really like the idea of just evolving and toying with it... it's going to be great fun. |
Crispy- do you pay per minute? No, I pay per megabyte. I have an initial cap (1.5 GB at the moment) which is covered by the monthly fee, and then any downloads beyond that incur a 15c per MB charge. 1.5 GB is usually plenty for me, but it does mean that I can't go casually downloading 100+ MB files all the time. =) |
That seems silly Crispy. It has been a long time since I have seen anyone who has a download cap, at least that low of one. I could download 1.5GB in a day, easiely. I average at about 200MB a day down, and probably a good 50MB up. Playing WoW alone for about 3 hours uses about 50MB down. You should find a new ISP.

Deadron hit the nail on the head - Australia's internet isn't as uber as United States internet. An internet plan which would be considered "decent" in the US is "awesome" in Australian terms, and costs about 10 times more. (I haven't done an actual comparison, this is just an educated guess.)
The 1.5 GB cap is the cheapest plan; I could easily get more, or go for an unlimited plan, but I'm too poor to afford it. =( That said, I don't think better internet would compensate for having to live in the US, so I'm okay with my situation. =P |
Scary thing is that the US is way behind the rest of the world in this stuff, and Australia is way behind the US...
Maybe we'll invade them and fix that. |
When I first started using the internet (2000?) I was on a 56k, pay per minute. It was cheaper after 6 pm.
Then it was free after 6 pm. Now it's just a monthly payment and you can use as much as you want (300 kb connection which is generally considered slow... I'd say most of my friends are 600 kb upwards to 2 MB). |

Hmmm, sounds like a real second world country you've got there, Crispy... Troll. =P Deadron wrote: Scary thing is that the US is way behind the rest of the world in this stuff Seriously? I thought internet was really cheap in the US? Maybe we'll invade them and fix that. Not a chance - we'll repel you with our mighty squadron of 11 Seasprite military helicopters! ... Oh, wait... crap. Elation wrote: Now it's just a monthly payment and you can use as much as you want (300 kb connection which is generally considered slow... It's gotten better over the years, but South Korea kicks our butts for speed and cost, as do many other countries. The US and Britain have been very delinquent on this stuff...ironically, probably in part because we already had an infrastructure, while some more "third-worldish" countries were starting more from scratch, so adopted celullar and broadband technologies from the get-go. Least, that's my guess on the reasons. |
The US isnt behind, its that there are few cable companys and they all have there own areas, so theres no competition. So it's either, $10 for 3 kb dialup. Or $50 for 600 kb cable.

From the footage so far, it seems not (it's only shown breeding between the same species, and I believe I heard something along the lines of "Ah, there's another one of this kind of creature, now we can breed", suggesting that this is a requirement), but considering the level of sophistication and detail in the engine, I have to think that they've included cross-breeding...
I mean, when you've got all of these infinite varieties of creatures roaming around the universe, who wouldn't want to start mixing them together? lol
