It's always sad when you just quit a project. I have always disliked how people just rush us and then we just lose all confidence in ourselves. :(

That was my biggest mistake was releasing Demo 1 of Storm 2 Byond when I had only two characters and one stage, it's gotten me from that time at the beginning of 2010 to now and I'm releasing Demo 16 (Already finished) which will rename it Storm BYOND and hopefully I shall continue it later. The other project is aiming to be worked on for ages to get it to be absolutely amazing in the production of DM and even one day top Teridal and NESTalgia. It's original and will have subscriber benefits, as well as voice acting and an original OST. (By the way, anyone interested in making an OST for the game or voice acting can contact me by my skype Naruto-rox_1 or my email [email protected] and I would have to get the consent of the leader of Abyssal Technologies Gaming to be able to let you work with the project!) |

What if the reference also linked to the C++ definition of vars, procs, etc. ? Could that be helpful? Pardon? |
But it doesn't always obey them, and C++ operators do a lot more. I don't think many people proficient in C++ are going to have issue with the DM operators, or well ... anything. The whitepaper does a reasonable job of covering what they need to get rolling.

It's becoming more and more common for freeware to come bundled with installers that throw adware at you.
While I'm annoyed at this because they're doing it in what I view as a shiesty way, if BYOND created an equivalent add-on that included advertising in my normal browsing I'd gladly utilize it to contribute to a project I support. Not sure if potential revenue makes this viable as an option, just a thought. |
For obvious reasons. But we're talking about a difference between ads placed on the site here for everyone to encounter (even those who don't desire them to be there, including the owners) and people voluntarily putting software on their own computer that earns the project revenue.
Didn't mean to include it with the natural installer or anything like that. Only allow people to get it if they want, etc. Supporting the cause if you will. |
Well, you can straight donate to the project, money permitting. I suspect the current pager's non-member ads solution would need assessing for revenue first before you could discuss more ads elsewhere.

BYOND has ads, on the website and the pager. Ah I see, I should disable it on this site then. Thanks for telling me! |
Smart people spend too much time talking and not enough time doing. Shooting ideas down before they even get out of the water ensures that the same old thing gets done with 100% certainty.
Personally I've had multiple people ask for video tutorials, and even recommend that I make some, particularly because seeing code is a lot easier to learn than "reading" code. Telling people to read the guide "doesn't" work. I took on an apprentice and spent for the better part of 6 months telling him to read the guide, which he did not. Instead he chose to do the trial and error, patch learning method, which made his basic knowledge questionable and his coding skills full of holes, and in the end he just turned into a selfish brat who decided I was at fault-- then proceeded to pay people to code things for him so that he could study them.My point is most people just want to solve the problem at hand-- regardless of if it's the right path for them to do so. Those are just some observations. Rather than doing something that doesn't work repeatedly, something needs to evolve-- or surprise, you'll just continue to fail. It may not be worth Mr. Tom or Mr. Lummox's effort to stop what they are doing to put together a video tutorial series, but as they say often, this is a community. Regardless of what a few people may think, video tutorials are alot easier to digest and read than books or text. Case in point, camtasia studio, rather than allowing people to read the "help" files, creates vid tutorials spanning 3-4 mins per subject. One more thing, technology isn't built by repeatedly doing the same thing or stubbornly choosing to stick with what is comfortable. Only innovation drives it forward, so in a technology based field such as this, it's a living death to not explore other options, video marketing is a wildly variable way to make money, but it also can be profitable- if you take the right approach. Making a video a week on an established v-blog might not provide money right away. But lets imagine if, say 5 years ago one had been started. Not only would it have a wide fanbase, but newer viewers would have the opportunity to check these out as well. Thousands of potential views each month is right alongside the byond pager's new ad system in terms of potential revenue building if you take the right approach to it. Not to mention those people who stumble upon the videos might actually decide to stick around. I'll be clear- there are no get rich quick make money on videos schemes, it will always require effort, but it is viable for a concept like this. Ultimately my point is, if you feel it would be a good idea, you should do it, I find that everyone has an idea of how things could be helped, but then often times they go about snubbing their noses at another person's attempts to be positive. You shouldn't let that stop you if you feel it will be beneficial to the community. |

So how exactly do I need to go about getting my tutorial video onto BYOND's YouTube?

So how exactly do I need to go about getting my tutorial video onto BYOND's YouTube? Record a video via Camtasia or Sony Vegas Pro (Most recommended are those two they are amazing. And mostly pirated. Hint Hint.) and edit out the parts you mess up on if you wish. Upload the video to Youtube and add a title that states it is a tutorial on BYOND DM Code and the part it is. Oh yeah, did I mention to break it up into parts? You should. Make sure the description is lengthy and descriptive of what they are going to learn and stuff like that. Put tons of tags to get more views. If you want to pull a noob mode, place irrelevant tags in the description to get even MOAR views. If you want it on the BYOND youtube you will have to contact the original creator or make your own. Become a youtube partner, make a google AdSense account, click monetize video on the ones you want to monetize to make money off of. When people ask questions in comments, respond as soon as you can and solve the issues! That's all I can think of for now. |

I already have it recorded. I used some newb CamStudio software so this video is a little sketchy, but I did fairly well with my slippery tongue. I'm going to get Camtasia for the next one. Upload the video to Youtube and add a title that states it is a tutorial on BYOND DM Code and the part it is. Oh yeah, did I mention to break it up into parts? You should. Yeah, for this one I did the first half of the first chapter of the DM Guide. Make sure the description is lengthy and descriptive of what they are going to learn and stuff like that. Put tons of tags to get more views. If you want to pull a noob mode, place irrelevant tags in the description to get even MOAR views. I think I'll keep myself from stooping that low. lol If you want it on the BYOND youtube you will have to contact the original creator or make your own. This is mainly what I was asking. Become a youtube partner, make a google AdSense account, click monetize video on the ones you want to monetize to make money off of. Oh yeah, and my video is 15 minutes long lol. |
Idk if the old byond youtube link is active, it's bare, but it wouldn't hurt to make an unofficial one and start posting videos there. I have a headset and camtasia so I may make one myself later on tonight.

Camstudio is okay for a first try :)!
Yes, go smoothly and then try to go a bit faster. Try to use Real life examples for the coding. For instance: Var can be use as a lock or as a number of keys you have. Proc: Procs are basically macros but in code version 15 Minutes is great. 'Cause the more minutes the more views. Believe me, I know what I'm talking 'bout |
I already have mine uploading on my channel lol.
I may make a new channel specifically for it. If so, I'll get in touch with you so we can collaborate and not be releasing videos on the same information. |
I actually like the way the DM guide explains vars and procs. It's not too tech-ey and its not too obscure.
It makes a clear distinction between verbs and procs, which is important. It says that variables are pieces of memory with names. The name is arbitrary, you can name it whatever you want. Once I get further in the series I'll release some more technical videos, covering subjects like naming conventions and pixel movement and what-not. The video will be up in about 30 minutes, I'll share the link here. Once it gets some feedback I'll make a post linking people to it in Tutorials & Snippets. Actually, here's the link it'll be at - I'll just let you know when it's done uploading and live on the site. http://youtu.be/L7hZ_bd90b4 |
