Wouldn't XNA make a better comparison than app stores..?

I mean, XNA was free to develop stuff with, I had a pretty nice looking example 2D game running before I got over it and came back to BYOND. And XNA required a yearly membership to deploy your games on the XBox 360.

Considering the price for that at the time was $100.00 US, I'd say paying $24.00 US isn't so bad for Flash stuff. Pretty safe bet that more people have access to Flash rather than an XBox.

The Narutard kids without access to their parents' credit cards are the problems with the site and community. Why accommodate them when you could accommodate potential developers that would contribute something WORTH HAVING!

The problem with this theory is that most users on byond are 16 or below in age. So I doubt this will have a positive reaction and may just end up being the death of byond.

Happy new year to the East Coast!
And to you, Bravo
You know what? I was a bit peeved about the membership cost changes, but if this encourages faster updates, better staff communication, and keeps Tom among the living for awhile I'm okay with it.

I am however planning on working out my own payment solution when the time comes, 30% is a bit steep unless more features are provided
If the subscription system is more full-featured and user-friendly (as-in automated setup on the website, and the ability to make a cash shop instead of just subscriptions), then I'd quite willingly pay 30% or more.
Memberships really should be considered as a monthly subscription as well. I can tell you that $24 is a bit much for my poor ass to put out at any given time, but I can certainly have my bank account automatically put out $2 (hell, I'd be willing to put up with $5) a month with ease.

I think this is a good idea. Some of the users that can't afford it straight up would be better accommodated. Also, you could give a discount if you pay for the whole year upfront. Say you go with $3 / month for monthly payments. That's $36/ year. Or, I could pay the whole membership fee upfront, which would be your $24. (Just an example)
@Complex Robot:

Unfortunately, Paypal is the only real method of transferring money from real world to digital world without horrendous fees. For example, if someone in the US was to use a money transfer (Western Union, or whatever) of $10 to the UK, it would have cost them an additional $25 in fees.

Using Mobile/Cell phone credit is more economical, most companies doesn't take the money from the person paying it, but instead charges you between 30-40% to transfer it to a paypal account or even more to a real bank account. The truth is with the transfer of money across countries and alternative payments you will always be plagued by riba/usury costs.
Whoops, I misunderstood your post, ignore me, lol. But my point still stands in general.

- Yea... I dont even have a bank account yet... but still, I have been using Byond free for almost 7 years so I atleast feel I should pay some of that back... If I ever get the chance ima just buy a lifetime membership and be done with it... which would really be a good Idea. a Lifetime for a certain price. like $300 or something. Just a Suggestion (:
The modernized forums may be the best thing in this update. Maybe that's just me, though.
Lol doesn't matter if you put $24 instead of $25. Cause until now I'm gonna buy some with a Gift Card instead of Paypal...
(l will donate $1 to BYOND after the updates, (Everytime a buy a membership))

As well how do i buy a Life time membership ^^

Likewise. If I have to set up my own subscription/money handling because BYOND's system doesn't let me do it the way I want, why would I go out of my way to send them a cut?

If you're moving to a percentage only cut(as opposed to the current 10% + $1), smaller payments could actually be viable, you would just need to differentiate between unique one-time purchases(or even just a single one-time purchase of game specific credit) and subscriptions.
Part of the allure of online multiplayer games is the micro-transactions. Those things make quite a bit of money. For a similar reason to why we would be willing to pay more in the long-run for a monthly membership fee.
Hell yes for the "best answer" thing for forums dedicated to requesting help. I demand a flag for users that have the best answer a lot of times, or highly voted answers. Like, something in gold that looks fancy. "Top 1000 Contributor" or something. And then "Top Contributor" for the coolest guy in the universe.

That's something I can get into.
Came back two days after reading this because I realized that if there's a flash client, you could use calls to the game to manipulate the webpage around it and display your own output, etc..

And thanks to things like Swiffy, it'd even be possible to put the client in iPhone and Android apps.

This is precisely what has me so interested. I'd love to get my hands on it so I can play.
The website/forum setup in a way reminds me a little of how the community on IMVU used to interact outside of the 3D client (back in 2005/6). It encouraged a lot more conversation and the community thereby helped filter out the rubbish by keeping the good stuff active. It's proven a great model for IMVU's website, which in a sense is a developer & client site. Similar to BYOND.

I really doubt it could fail here so I am looking forward to this. All we need now is less lag with mass players + pixel movement and we'll be ready to take over the world!
We're awaiting anxious for this update to happen!
