So i've decided that i'd go ahead and try to throw out an idea to unite BYOND developers in one project. I already have a vague design, that I am in love with, though that would litterally take a huge team to make.

But really I just want BYOND to get together and to make a game to show off BYOND! To get this site out there. And there is no better way than making a giant MMORPG really. When people join the game they will want to see how it was made and to see if they can make their own games. And I really think this will decline in all the RIPS littering this site. I will work on it no matter what, but the more people to join me the better this will work out(Inspired by John Lennon hah). Okay well wrote all this over couple days worth of planning and from ~4 - 9:am. I'ma go to sleep then re-read this and comment with a straight head hahaha.
I honestly have no idea how to respond to this.
This is all assuming that all the BYOND developers would be able to--or want to--get behind the same idea, develop a game together in the same style, etc.

Look at how much difficulty anybody trying to put together a team to help them develop their own personal vision for a game has. Do you think tacking "for the good of BYOND" on will really make that much of a difference? Any decent game project that's completed and then publicized effectively will help BYOND.

So if you have an idea that you're in love with and you can figure out how to unite enough people behind it to get it made, more power to you. But pitching it as a site-wide project isn't likely to help get you any traction.
You are half-right, considering I fell asleep 3 times while writing this idea(Not on this page, but on the Design Philosophy). But my main point is right. If a team could get together to create an MMORPG for BYOND just like one I described(And in no means do I mean, cmon everyone do what I tell you) it would really put BYOND up in the big-leagues. The idea I had just seemed liked it would work at 3 am without sleeping for 2 days lol).

You have to agree with me though that something like this would deffinatly work. I really just blew it out of perportion. Though maybe that's what people need; is for someone to just throw the project in their faces ya know?

No, I honestly don't have to agree. And I don't agree. I don't think you're right about this.

In the first place, there's the problem of assembling the team. But even ignoring that:

A great big MMO on BYOND is going to pale in comparison to a great big MMO that's built from the ground up to be a great big MMO (i.e., an actual MMO like WoW or what have you), so it doesn't make sense to try to compete in that arena.

Far better to try to make good but un-massive multiplayer roleplaying games that can appeal to individual tastes. This is where the success of NEStalgia and SS13 come from. The two games have very little in common, but each has an appeal that speaks to a particular demographic. This is also why anime rips will always be popular. Built in target audience.

The best thing for BYOND is more games like that. I don't mean clones of NEStalgia or of SS13, I mean games that are made with a particular "market" in mind, made by people who will connect to that market outside of BYOND. By appealing to specific interests, these games offer things that big 3D engine-run games with massive server networks can't offer.

There is no "The game that will [make/save/whatever] BYOND". Rather, there are a bunch of games waiting to be made.

Though maybe that's what people need; is for someone to just throw the project in their faces ya know?

Yeah. Hey, you go make me a roleplay-heavy Buffy the Vampire Slayer themed game. Yes, you. Yes, now.

...

How did that work out for you?

Do you feel motivated?

Do I have the game I want to play?

No?

Okay, then. I guess some random person "throwing a project" in people's faces doesn't work.
Won't happen. Won't even remotely happen. You are basically asking democrats and republicans to come up with a solution to Americas debt together. Won't happen.
It doesn't take a community-wide effort to show what BYOND can do. However, it would be a good thing to show what the community can do. BYOND's strength should be that it has a community of many game developers making interesting games, not that it has a lot of developers who can work together to make one crappy hodgepodge. Also, making an MMORPG doesn't highlight the BYOND community's game design ability because MMORPGs are bland by definition.

I think your best bet would be a community-wide contest where individual developers each make games, but it's hard to organize contests in a way that people actually participate.
Yeah i've made a few contests before, just please forget the part about the whole, "community-wide effort" and ,"using all of BYOND's best members" I was on ambien and klonopin so was slightly out of my mind. What I really wanted was a great team to make that game idea I had posted.
You know what I think would work better than short-term contests for encouraging quality games? Standing prizes. Instead of giving people a few weeks or months to put together the best game they can on a narrow theme, offer a purse for the best ______ of 2012. And then again for 2013.

This gives people more time to become aware of the prize. It gives them an incentive to focus on quality and true completion rather than quickness and technically meeting requirements. The longer interval allows for the possibility of larger prizes.

Ideally, among the conditions of entry would have to be that the game be something that could be listed on the HUB and freely playable. Subscriber benefits would be okay, but it should be something that is either permanently hosted or downloadable or both, and that anyone can play.
Developers have shown time and time again they can't tackle large MORPGs. We only have a few ( Silk Games, Iccussion, etc. ) that have proven they can. What BYONDers should focus on are smaller projects - things that don't take several months or years to finish. Especially when these teams don't even have prior development experience. Part of the reason Silk Games was probably able to pull off their MORPG is because they already had created games in the past together, so they had time to grow and become experienced before jumping into a project as large as NEStalgia.

Start off small and work your way up. My first game was a simple little RTS that took me like 2 weeks to finish.

Keyword finished, meaning I didn't stop the project halfway through. Part of the reason why was because I wasn't trying to make something so large that I couldn't handle it alone.
This whole post was messed up, it was me rambling on while under the influence of ambien and zolpidem. It really meant to be a classified add, which Forum_Account already sparked my interest
EmpirezTeam i've already helped and made over a dozen games including 'Decadence' one of the top 10 like most popular games on BYONd lol I don't need a lesson sorry. I'm closing the thread, everyones taken it out of context. Just made it so only my members can post

BTW I already made a very nice RTS if you look to your left EmpirezTeam :p
There is a start for everything.
I'm up for it!
I'm quite intrigued with this idea you have or Forums idea he had, but has been taking his time on developing it. I might be able to squeeze some pixel art time in for this once things get set in motion. As for now baka add me on pager and message me/ leave me a message on my byond webpage, and we'll get in touch.

Thanks,
ECA

The usual... If you asked me.

Actually I had about 60% of the work done on my older computer, unfortunately it was 12 years old, used Win2000, the computer would even lag badly on the game Decadence which I really helped make! Then it fried so I didn't get to save any of the work I had done. So recently I just bought a new computer that is 100x better(Can play Battlefield 3 and Skyrim, with a screen ~1.5x bigger in HD to help with the graphics; and 4 surround sound speakers with a subwoofer 'cos outside of BYOND I use it to produce music). My brother is going to try and fix up the old comp to try and restore at least some of my important work. So you are right, I have basically no work; though I have a hand-written journal filled with the game designs, sketches, storyboards etc.

Plus, i'm not just some guy with a bunch of ideas, I am an experienced pixel artist, programmer, game designer&producer. And quite a resume of games I have worked on for the past 8 1/2 years(Finally stuck with this name and made it a member 5 1/2 years ago). So i'd say in this case it's not the usual, "Newbie with the best thing since sliced bread" lol.

@KidPaddle45: Yes there is, if your up for it then contact me bro! My information is all over this site hahah, or just page me if that's simpler.

@EclipseCovertAgent: Well thank you. Yeah I was lucky Forums had a similar idea to mine that i'd been working on for years. It'd be great to keep in touch.

Also to everyone I just posted a big post summarizing the game on the Developer Forums. Hopefully this will get you excited, help you understand, and answer your questions or make you want to join! :D

A developer of the BYOND community, but no need to fret about it. He is just voicing his outlook.
