++ I love this idea!
How about response tags in parts of a thread? Lets say someone tagged a post in another thread it should show who tagged it and where.

Also, to add more to the membership feature; they could tag whoever they want.

Yes and non-members can only tag people on their pager/friends list.

This. ^

I'm not saying this is a bad idea or that we couldn't do it (it sort of fits in with a new pager feature we have coming in the next iteration), but what's the advantage of this over just paging your friend with a link? Wouldn't it get awfully cluttery having these public tags in all of these threads, or am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?
It's more of notification kind of thing, especially for the website it's not easy to find a user and page them, you have to go to their member site of find them on the forums just to tell them about a post.

@Flysbad Tom replied! - would just notify Flysbad that I mentioned him in a post that would be interesting to him.

We have to have limits on this so people don't spam..

I'm assuming it'd work like on Facebook - if they're tagged in a the first post (not the comments) they are automatically subscribed to the topic unless they 'Unfollow'. It'd function similar to behavior where if you'd comment in a topic, you'd get one notification and nothing else from that topic until you've checked it, even if you've been tagged multiple times before you check it.
This behavior is also similar to where you get notifications from topics started by people you follow.

If you're tagged in a comment, you just get a notification for that single comment, you're not auto-subscribed. More of a "hey check this out" or "I need your attention" - similar to paging someone a link. As above, you wouldn't get multiple notifications if there's already one pending.
So is the tag a separate thing to the post, or do you have to make a comment with the tag in it?
I'd honestly prefer something like Twitter's mention system (Doing @user in the comment) rather than Facebook's "With" system (Going through a list and choosing people, then your message tagging people at the very end automatically).

Facebook actually has both @person, and with person.

Really? I know you can tag people mid-post with that annoying popup that comes up every time you start typing what might be someone's name.
Either way sounds good to me, it's just making the forums more social really..

Using @ automatically brings up the popup, otherwise you have to type a good portion of a friend's name for it to appear.
Any news on this?
