So I was rocking the MSN tonight and got talking about 8bit games versus 3d and I have to say I was disappointed by the way people view 8 bit in comparison to 3d.
Apparently some people wont re-pick up classics like the original pokemon's,mario's,sonik's,zelda's and even the final fantasys because of horrible graphics.
Those are just a few titles from the classic era of 8 bit gaming which has seemingly passed into the abyss for the most part , not to say some of the games that still rock the old ways aren't flaunting their stuff pretty darn well such as the megaman series.
Now personally in my experience Graphics aren't the overpowering effect in a game its instead the amazing gameplay and carefully thought out development that keeps you coming back for more. Yes amazing graphics can give a certain wow factor but that lasts nearly as long the gameplay itself. Most games nowadays lack the replay-ability factor , not to say there isn't a 3d game that hasn't achieved huge success but its rare you have a game now that will go down into the ages for being an all time classic and makes you love how far gaming has come.
I am all for progress and the gaming front is going stronger than ever, but ask yourself how many times have you sold that flashy game for an upgraded version or a seemingly flashier game, unless your a hoarder or have cash coming out of all ends, now many people wouldn't dream of selling their games from the 8 bit era as lets face it you'll never see it again unless you get an emulator but wheres the fun in that xD.
Byond has a few gems of the 8 bit graphics but deserves many more as Byond is undoubtedly the perfect platform for it, but I fear for the general consensus of Byonds community who would prefer to play a flashy new game that doesn't use ripped icons over a generally well thought out and challenging 8 bit game because of "Poor graphics".
Point of this rant is to basically see peoples opinions on this topic am i just a madman missing the old times or am I right in saying the games of today albeit flashy and addictive for us mindless gamers at times have destroyed peoples views of the classics of a generation past and would prefer to choose or even develop a game that uses its graphics to gain a hold on popularity over well thought out gameplay and replay-ability.
I have nothing against 3d games or Byonds spectacular display of graphics on 2d games here I just think a little more respect should be give on the 8 bit games would help save what ever is left of the dignity that was many of our childhood experiences with the classics.
Anyway untill next time cya

I agree, I miss 8bit :/

I'm a graphics whore, so usually the best looking graphics will pull me in more.
However, I still pickup older games. People don't take the technology available at the time the game was released into consideration. Like back in the day, OoT had amazing graphics. Anyway, I still play Pokemon Red and Monster Rancher for the Gameboy Color. |D |
Byond has a few gems of the 8 bit graphics but deserves many more as Byond is undoubtedly the perfect platform for it You can pay homage to 8-bit games in other ways than by copying the graphical style. A lot of 8-bit games were simple because they had to be. If the game designers had better hardware they'd have made different games. You have to look at what these games were trying to achieve, not what they actually did. If you copy these games very closely then you're probably missing the point because you're copying what they did, not what they were trying to do. That being said, there still are very few BYOND games that are reminiscent of 8-bit games. I think its mostly because people don't focus on gameplay at all, so their gameplay wouldn't ever turn out retro. |
