In the BYOND Dream Maker program you can only have a max canvas size of 256x256, and even then going above 96x96 can lead to a laggy canvas, that's exactly what I don't want. I wouldn't mind using Photoshop to sprite, but that leaves a gray background, which can't be removed in canvases over 256x256 due to not being able to edit them in Dream Maker. My question to you is: Are there any good programs to sprite in, which don't leave an annoying background when pasted into Dream Maker?

.dmi files are actually .png files with extra stuff.

I use MS Paint. If you want to get rid of the background color for images larger than 256x256, you can go to Colors > Edit, click on the background color and just hit delete on it. As for the lag, I don't really know what to tell you.

I never really found much use in paint, but I suppose it would be a decent spriting program.
As far as Colors > Edit, I already knew that trick, but I never considered utilizing it to get rid of backgrounds in images too large to edit. So thanks Oondivinezin. |
I use gimp. You can flatten out the dmi files by renaming them as .png, once you do that you can edit them in gimp normally in sheets, you can also add a grid overlay if you are doing animations, etc.
Also I haven't ever gotten the annoying background issue. Graphics Gale is good I hear as well for spriting. |
Use GIMP by using a 1x1 pixel pencil tool brush. It will be the 2nd brush option called pixel (after clicking the brush icon). In the latest GIMP versions (that I'm using anyway), you need to go to Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Tool Options where you must set the size to 1.
I will warn you though, GIMP is not an animation tool (even with the GAP plug-in), but if you can manage to understand all an animation is but a collection of static frames put together, it should be no problem doing simple things. Otherwise might want to look into something like Graphics Gale or Promotion, but I believe these options are not free. Graphics Gale has a 30-day free trial if you want to try before you buy though. If you're new to pixel art, I suggest looking around these sites for guidance. Their community is full of professional/intermediate artists that can assist you more than Byond ever can, since the lack of said artists. www.wayofthepixel.net/ www.pixeljoint.com/ |
