And nothing of value would be lost. Except ET's black cherry.

What exactly does this mean?

Sure looks popular to me with all zero of those servers it has up.

popular. But how many play it. Dont get me wrong. Its a great game. But it doesn't attract an audience it should.
I agree. Good post, E.T!
It's popular in that a lot of people on BYOND have seen it. But that's not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about a highly active game averaging well above the normal player counts we see on BYOND games.
All things have a high and a low. I predict that a new batch of original games is coming. Look at Feed, Jail Em!, NUO, etc.
If you want to show people an example of a successful BYOND game, you should probably point them towards Space Station 13. Sure, one or two games may have briefly become more popular than it, but for the past year (at least) it has averaged 100-200 players for more or less all day. As far as I am aware it has several fan made wikis as well.
I have also seen tons of fan stories about the game, fan art, comics and someone is even remaking the game outside of BYOND (the one thing players agree is keeping the game down) and in 3D.

It is probably the most popular game BYOND has ever had outside of the BYOND website (and maybe even within the BYOND community).

I don't know how or why it became popular though, but I suspect for a similar reason people play games like Dwarf Fortress. Although it did take a few years for it's popularity to pick up, which could be a large part of it.

But, my advice for when you want to advertise a game outside of BYOND is simple. Try to distance yourself as much from BYOND as is possible.
Both the program and community have pretty poor reputations by people who have ran into either in the past.

My advice for trying to get people inside of the BYOND community to play is show them massive numbers and give them a super ssj9tails zanpaktu frog base as soon as they login, because the average BYOND user plays a game for about 1 minute and 40 seconds before giving up.
ET needs to get laid.
Nobody said that BYOND games are only allowed to attract current BYOND users. BYOND is a tool to make game development easier. It is not a collection of gamers ready to play your latest creation. People view it as that, but that doesn't make it true.

People talk about the "byond community" as being the collection of all BYOND users (game players and developers), but really there is no such thing. People who play "Battle Universe X" aren't part of the BYOND community, they're part of the Battle Universe X community.
It's sad, because even if you do advertise outside of BYOND people seem to identify BYOND as a "kiddie language" because of the reputation it has with all the shitty games. While BYOND is not a bad language overall, it is a bad language if you want to make a successful game.

If you want a game that averages hundreds of players online at once, don't make your game using BYOND.

You can say that once BYOND allows people to play the games without download/installing BYOND.

NARTO FROG?!?!?!

Dream Seeker is being ported to Flash. This will allow users to play games via their browsers, which also removes the restriction on operating systems. Word is something about it will be out by the end of the year.
Do you need to know any languages to plug your game into a browser? or will it be pretty simple?

Only SilkWizard knows. He got to test it.
Fangames will always get more views than originals in any plot.

WoW probably worked a shitload of advertising and paying just to get their GOOD quality game seen.

Ninja Saga was just like, "YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN NINJA CHARACTER FROM NARUTO. COME NOW."

Well, I always wanted to build my own Ninja Character instead of be a Giant Armored Troll so...Ninja Character.

Indie Game Designing isn't a contest, if you're not in it because you ACTUALLY like developing then go into the professional career where you're payed to make games so even if it's shit you still have your money.

Fangames get an easier advertising listing because people will naturally look them up but they can easily be shut down despite how good (Legend of Zelda: Shadowgazer)

Why is Battle Universe X popular has nothing to do with fangames. It has something to do with Finale, and the playerbase there LOVED the game and GREW up with the game. Of course they'd move onto the next game because of the community they grew up with.

I have so much faith in Eternia, if it ever finishes, because they're going in the right direction in game development.
