So, I am a huge fan of Dragon Age. I've recently started attempting to make my own dragon age icons. Not for any project really, just for myself. Mostly ive started the bases for some of the major races men, elves, dwarves, and a few of the darkspawn types. They are meant to have a sorta cartoonish feel to them and i made the heads slightly larger so that facial hair, facial tattoos, eye color, and etc... would be more noticable. Im sort of stuck and afraid that if i attempt anymore im just gonna completely ruin my work so far. Not too confident in my abilities at this point for finishing the dirs and adding movement states. I posted some previews of what i have so far. From this post im looking to get some advice, examples, etc from those on byond who are more experienced with creating icons.

Well, I really love Dragon Age as well and these icons are alright so far.
I would suggest however that you make the Darkspawn a greenish colour and not purpleish blue like they are now. In the game they were more like an earthy tone because essentially that's where they come from. As far as the dwarves go, they shouldn't just be short. They should be almost like a rectangle they should have very thick bodies and very small body frames because of living underground in caves, but also because of the weapons they use. Which are hammers and broad swords and axes things that require a lot of strength just to lift and make the attack. When making Humans and Elves I think you have to remember that elves and humans in this game were pretty much exactly the same except humans where taller and lacked the pointy ears. Elves where a little shorter but not by much, and had the same body type but instead of being muscular, they just lacked muscle definition. This is mostly because elves are considered magical or distance fighters. Using a staff and shooting projectiles whether magical or from a bow and arrow won't make you as muscular as say, welding a sword and using heavy Armour. The plus side for elves is that they are lighter and faster, the downside is that damage effects them greater because of that lack of Armour protection. And then of course humans are pretty obvious. They can range from thin to thick and skinny to muscular pretty easily. It just depends on what kind of human they are. On that note, you should take into account the type of fighter they are to base they body type they have. Like mentioned before, elves lack muscle definition because most are magical and do not use heavy Armour or require strength training. But if an elf where to fight with sword and shield then his body type would be different. Same with human. But not the same with dwarves, as you know from playing the game, Dwarves are incapable of using magic. So... In turn they might use a bow and arrow but being short and thick would prevent them from moving quickly so it is unlikely. This is just an observation I wanted to pass on, and I would love to see a Dragon Age like game on BYOND at some point as well, so I wish you luck in your iconning. =] |
