What is the best way, in your opinion, to handle the death of a character, in a multiplayer RPG?
Respawing is just lame, I believe.
Ghosting it up, is just frustrating, I believe.
Death ordeals, follows the same line as Ghosting it up.
So, what's some good ways to handle a players death?

Send them to heaven/hell based on thier karma. Karma can be gained/lost based on thier actions (selection of missions, players killed, etc.) In "heaven" and "hell" they could be put to trials, and by passing these trials they can be sent back to earth. Of course I would think up some other name than heaven and hell, one more fitting to the RPG, but I think thats what I would do.

Sometimes it's rather annoying if you have to keep going through the same things over and over when you die. You just want to get back not spend 5minutes wasting your time because some spam killer killed you and will probably kill you again.
So be careful in how you do it. You don't want the death process to become to tedious. |
It sounds like you're fishing for someone to respond with "permadeath". I don't see what else can be done with a character's death other than...not bringing him back, which you seem to have already covered. :/

I'd say respawning, Starwars Galaxies style.
They force you to respawn at the nearest cloning center (if you didn't clone yourself at another one first), which can be very far away or right next to you. |
when ever a player dies, just delete the character and make them start over in a new "life"
|
Depends entirely on the game and the design philosophy you're shooting for.
So, yeah, you aren't going to get any meaningful answers. |
Roleplaying is acting like you're another person, right?
Unless this person is immortal, you should die. And stay dead. |
Well, you COULD go with perma-death, but you could do it another way:
When the player dies, they have to endure a random maze or a random minigame to regain their life. This could be anything from a game of blackjack, to a 100 piece jigsaw puzzle. It'd add a neat twist to an RPG and I think it'd be cool to see it done. |
They could be given an option. A game of black jack with death, if they win they live instantally, if they lose their character is deleted. Or take the random maze.
But that again gets anoying after so many deaths. And it gets lame. <.< |
Make them guess a number and if they get it right they can play the game again.
If they get it wrong their character is dead forever and ever. Other than that, respawn, "ghosting" (which is pretty lame if you ask me), and trials after death are pretty much the only way. |
Permadeath is the #1 best way to reduce your game's bandwidth usage.
Unless, of course, your game is designed from the ground up to work with it. |

Scary. You could always do with just a countdown timer, maybe they need to wait say 20 minutes to respawn and in that time they can be given a chance to reduce the time? (Running around a maze picking up items of somesort?) |
Put them into different afterlifes.
Like if you die in one place, respawn in a whole new afterlife. When you die in that one...go to a new one. When you reach the end, kill god and wait until someone tries and kills you... HARHAR! |

(Running around a maze picking up items of somesort?) But the thing is, that's so very frustrating and anoying after the third or fourth time. Back in "The ole' DBZ days" I hated the necessity to run an excessively long snake way, with risk of falling off, because some asshole thought it would be fun to whipe out all the newer players. It gets anoying redoing the same death scene a hundred thousand times. There has to be a way to handle death, that takes, at least, a very long time to get tedious and anoying. Could always just do the whole save point thing. Various towns have various savepoints, if you die you spawn there? |
