I'm not going to pretend that I know a whole lot about the issue... but what I do know is this: they are called illegal immigrants for a reason. Our country has set forth laws both to protect the security of our borders and the integrity of our economy that make these people's presence in our country illegal. I'm not saying that those laws are 100% just or correct, but they are the rules that the majority has agreed to.
Now most of the illegal immigrants are demanding amnesty. Ummm... If we give amnesty to every single illegal immigrant, then we might as well open our borders and just get rid of the term "illegal" and allow anyone to live in the United States.
There are plenty of people trying to go about obtaining citizenship in this country the legal way. Why should we cater to people who have refused to obey our laws from the get-go?
I'm not trying to say that we should round them up and ship them back to where they came from. We really need way better security at the border and some much stricter laws in place before we start trying to deal with the people who are already here.
However, I think that it's perfectly fair and reasonable to make all illegal immigrants pay back-taxes for all of the years that they've lived in the United States tax free. The rest of us have had to pay taxes during that time, so why shouldn't they?
Blah. Anyway, the bottom line is that people living in our country illegally acting like we owe them something is just really irritating to me.

I do partly agree, I mean, you say "Illegal is illegal for a reason", the US and Australia have paticularly strong laws against immigration, Ironic, being that these two countries, despite having "native" people, comprimise mostly of European settler decendents. However, its a little too strong. I used to hold a very different view, I didnt want anyone who wasnt british and white out of my country, and I was a god damn fool then. Acebloke, comparing Australia with the states in this case is completely off. Why? Borders. Immigration is much harder when you have to do it though an ocean (Thats why we don't complain about Cuba too much.)
We have a lady at work, around 28, she moved here from Colombia and is attempting to become a legal American citizen, she is currently a legal immigrant. She is very nice, kind, and helpful. Her english is still lacking, but she is trying, and has taken many classes so she could communicate at a decent level. I tell you this because she is proof of someone who really wants to become a US citizen, legally and fair. Now illegal immigrants think they have a right to citizenship before her? Our immigration rules suck horribly, mostly because our government has been running a paranoia campaign revolving around 'Boat people' (Read: Asylum seekers. AKA, potential refugees), that they then preceded to misname 'illegal immigrants' (Seeking asylum is perfectly legal under the International Declaration of Human Rights), just so they could get re-elected. The immigration is causing US Americans to lose jobs. It's bullcrap. Females that are latino--pregnant, running over the line when it comes time for the baby. I don't mind people coming to our country. Everyone always complains about "They're stealing our jobs!" but it's just propaganda. When have you ever looked for a job and not been able to find one? Besides, most of the jobs they can safely take are ones you wouldn't want to have anyway.
