Sorry about that... Everyone take it to the pager!
Lets have a journalism guild to talk about BYOND stuff!
All these people talking about BYOND stuff should shut up!

I know a version of Dungeon Master had unit selection(Click and Drag) and it wasn't to bad.

I went and checked it out. Either it doesn't actually draw a selection box or my connection was just too slow and it wasn't updating fast enough; both which are drawbacks of not having a client-side selection box.

You only say that because no RTS ( like Starcraft ) has ever done it before.

I reference Starcraft because it's sort of the gold standard right now. It has the biggest pro scene and the most active community of any RTS out there.

The other two big franchises were Warcraft and Command & Conquer, both which used selection boxes. C&C especially relied on the selection box because those games were more about pumping out insane numbers of units.

But if you went for something more diverse like Warcraft and had around 20 units, that wouldn't work out.

Right, which is exactly what I'm saying. Unless you want to severely cut back on the scope of your game you're going to need that selection box. Hotkeys aren't a viable solution to this because they're complicated and hard to learn. The selection box is very noob-friendly and wont require the player to memorize a whole bunch of buttons which might even change depending on what army they're playing as.
@SuperAntx: Take it to pager.
I understand a few replies back and forth are fine, but once you start a reply chain in a topic thread that is of no relevance to the topic's content then you should think on bringing it to a private setting.

In the podcast you talked about strategy games and asked why the only ones around were old and not updated. I dropped in my comment about how real-time strategy games aren't viable on BYOND because it's lacking one simple feature. The following conversation has been about how to either solve or avoid the problem; all which has been on topic.
Good stuff. I've enjoyed both so far. In fact, I prefer the free form.

Light suggestion: Script the high level stuff and just let it flow naturally. You (Oasiscircle) have a natural gift for conversation and your voice is "radio gold" so just kick start the conversations with a group of chatty/interesting people. If something sticks and people are having a good discussion, just let it go for as long as it takes.

It's nice to change topics and gears often but never when the topic is hot. I recommend adding some sort of sound effect or announcement which says "hey you, the guy reading his email, who barely realizes he's listening anymore, we are changing topics now so listen up" sort of thing. (gong)

if you come prepared with a healthy list of items and you ask others to bring a few items to discuss, you can just do something like, "x, whattaya got?". And x would bring up whatever topic he/she has if any or would say pass. Each person gets to bring up a single topic as it goes around. Sort of round robin news reporting. Might help offload some stuff as well as prevent you from taking all the low hanging fruit to start. ;)

See if you can convince shakers and movers to join the show as "talk show guests". Get their take on this or that and certainly ask a couple tough uncomfortable questions. You might even invite trolls just so we can hear how truly stupid they are.

Anyway, fan of the show. Look forward to the next one. I'd love to hear shows like this one once a week if you have it in you.
You guys are funny xD

*Thumbs up* If I was a member, I'd totally Yea you!

I second Tsfreak like crazy. You could even do a small Call segment where you "phone" random Byond Members and ask them what they think about this or that. Sound effects during hot times are "snazzy" (third time I used that word..) so try them out.
@Truseeker, Tsfreaks: Thanks a ton for the criticisms, just remember that true BYONDlings show love by naying this post. ;)
I did my normal gimicky formating update that I usually do for you guys. I also added a little box to "inform" people of BYONDcast's new future.
You and your fancy boxes.
They're my new fetish.
Love fancy boxes. they look snazzy "*Word overusage* *Insert*" 'fancy'.

@Akto, that laserdog mention in Byondcast had me rofl.
@Truseeker - Trollin a troll...
@Akto: And not like a boat.

What is up with trolling the troll and something about him having a boat? xD I have no idea what you guys mean.
@Truseeker: You'd have to be a fisherman to get that reference.
There are two motor types when fishing, your large motor for getting across the lake or going in to shore and it makes a lot of noise so you don't use it while you're fishing, and then there's a low-powered slow motor that you use when you're fishing. That motor is called a "trolling" motor and so we compare "trolling" through topics on the internet to get content for the BYONDcast show because we're going slow and making sure to get all the content.
And on the show Fugsnarf makes the joke that he's not a big of a troll as me, and I say "trolling like a boat, he means" because that's what he actually means, I go through more topics and content than he had done.

Exhaustive explanation is exhaustive.
lol. You totally ruined the fun of the joke by explaining it.
@Fusnarf: Hey, I know this show is known to have a lot of obscure references, so we're sure to conjure up some more along the way! ;)
