I was just cruising between games and I start getting mass-pages about this cool looking Cow game. I go to it and realize that it's a rip of CRP, a pretty fun Cow-Based RPG. It had a listed hub to add insult to injury.
What I do not understand is why ripping is acceptable? I mean, all BYOND does is unlist the hubs. Other than in the cause of FUNimation, I haven't seen any hubs removed/deleted for being rips. Are people allowed to go around with extractors or to just simply steal art/music from screenshots/cache folders? Because I don't think simply unlisting a hub is going to stop them from ripping. Hardly anyone I know finds games by searching for them. They goto games that their friends are on via pager.
So... any suggestions? Discuss the topic?
Sidenote: I would appreciate it if the topic was left on the "Community" page since it is a serious topic and I am not going around accusing people, I just want an intelligent and understandable answer.

Because it's mediocre mindset BYOND has built up.

There are different ways to copy things:
1. Use a copy of the game's code and icons to make your own version of the game. 2. Rip a game's icons and copy its gameplay by writing the code yourself. 3. Rip a game's icons and use them to make an unrelated game. #1 is the easiest to manage because it's the easiest to detect. #2 and #3 are difficult because it's hard to know who made what icon. With people working in teams, hiring artists, and giving permission to certain people, it's hard to know who is allowed to use an icon and who isn't. There are two reasons I can think of for why this behavior is allowed: 1. There's no perfect way to tell who is stealing from who, so a harsh punishment (delete the hub, ban the user, etc.) is avoided in case someone is wrongly accused. The staff doesn't have to spend hours figuring out who made your grass icon and if you're allowed to use it, they can just hide the hub entry and everyone moves on. 2. Harsh punishments would scare off membership-purchasing users. Once there gets to be more good games on BYOND the staff can be pickier about what is allowed on the hub, and there'll be enough users attracted to the good games that the lost income from scaring off the rippers isn't sorely missed. |
People are using Android Data's Cowed source that he made "Open Source" which basically made it public to everyone to use.
I don't know why it's just now starting to really take effect. |
But Cowed was based off CRP's 2007, version 2.1 or something src code, correct? So it's a rip either way.

Im with you on this post Master ^^
PS: Im glad we have another Master on BYOND =D |
But really... can anything other than an unlisted hub be done for certain games?
|
You are completly right. Hubs should be deleted for a certain degree of ripping. Now we know peoole are using extractors can't do much about that but the cache files should be blocked or something because I noticed the byond pager opens up other people's game cache files nd stuff so...yeaa...

A RSC extractor does exist but it's entirely useless if used on the .rsc files located in the cache. Of course, the .rsc included with a game's .dmb is not encrypted and can still be extracted, so only giving out host files to trusted people is the best way to go. |
Lol I wasn't talking about a rsc extractor...
I meant a source extractor lol... |

Well, really, it isn't the fact that some ripped games have hubs up. Noobs have rips of HU and HU2 that they host seperatly and just pager spam the links. Not having a hub doesn't exactly completly doom the game.

Lol nd trust me there's more than 2 people with src extractors... No. Sorry. You seem to be confused. There is no such thing as a source extractor. There are .dmb decompilers, but they spit out a mess of jumbled shit that is unusable by anyone not competent enough with the language to be able to write the code for themselves in the first place. On top of that, they are in the possession of only a very few people who never released them to the public. Stop trying to spread these obviously incorrect rumors of random narutards having access to decompilers. |
Lol yes you normally would be right but there is a src extractor I know someone who used C++ to create one. So its not like a dmb decompiler...
|
You CANNOT "extract" a source from a dmb or an rsc. It doesn't work that way. Anyone who told you otherwise is lying. The cache files and rsc contain no code whatsoever, so any "src extractor" that works the way you claim doesn't work at all. All code is stored in the .dmb, and it's compiled into a format that is unusable after decompilation without extensive work being done on it.
In the extremely unlikely event that someone DOES have a decompiler, I suggest you warn them that actually using such a thing without permission is quite illegal(as it is theft of intellectual property and hacking). |
