Many of the disgruntled anime kiddies started up an email campaign to Square Enix (and other companies) to try and get NEStalgia taken down. They were too stupid to realize that a game actually has to be infringing in order to get a C&D for copyright infringement... but I'm guessing that's why BYOND was on SE's radar.

They get an A for effort anyway. |

Maybe next they'll contact Jagex to have Teridal taken down for being too much like Runescape, or Mojang for games like Haz and Stranded. Has anyone gone to CBS (Own the rights to Star Trek) to get SS13 taken down for being Sci-Fi? |

Why bring down just a few games when you can destroy the whole site? ;D |

SUPRISE! BYOND/DUNG has been around longer then YoYo Games & Gamemaker. NO |
This is absurd. These games aren't taking any calculable amount of money away from Square Enix.
Maybe if Square Enix would spend more time making games that are actually good instead of crap like their failures of Final Fantasy MMOs, they would have something better and lucrative to focus on. All they're doing here is slapping the fans in the face. |

Doesn't bother me since I'm working on making something not Final Fantasy. Which is what the entirety of BYOND should be doing. |
What BYOND needs is people willing to make icons for games. We would have many more games out there.

I do agree with you. There are some quality projects out there though already that just need graphic artists. A certain level of artist value is needed to really draw people in, the game itself is what keeps them coming back.

All you need is consistency. You don't need 'supa 1337 skillz' to draw icons like those in NEStalgia, Regressia, Casual Quest, and Ninja Team, all successful in their own rights. Heck, even Hazordhu's icons were all drawn by myself, and I'm in no way an artist.

art value isn't always being a great artist, it's things that look good together.

It's certainly possible for a fan game to become big enough that it does affect Square, so it makes sense for them to discourage fan games. They're just erring on the side of caution and assume that any game may be big enough or become big enough to be a problem. It'd be hard for them to come up with a "we'll allow fan games that are somewhat insignificant" type of policy. They're also not going to bother playing BYOND games to figure out how significant the game is. If you were in their position, you'd do the same thing. Also, I'm pretty sure their legal department isn't responsible for making games. Whether their legal team sends these notices out or not, they're putting the same effort into developing games. |
