I've pondered a question lately: why are fangames and anime games looked down upon in the BYOND community?
I understand not everyone has something against them, but come on, plenty of people do. People like something, they want to make a game about it. Not to mention that a fraction of BYOND's community is here because of fangames or anime games. Here's something that could happen to anyone:
Your friend says to you, "Hey, there's a cool Naruto game you should check out!" You come here, make a key and play that game. Later on, you hear about another cool game, this one not fangame/anime. Give a little more time, and you've played tons of BYOND games that are non-fangame/anime.
This is just what happened to me, although it wasn't Naruto.
Also, another point I could make is that a lot of great devs could have had their first game as a fangame/anime game and then gone off to create their own original games.

There are (or were) thousands of Naruto, Bleach, and Dragon Ball Z games on the hub. What's really annoying is not the fact that they are anime/fan games but that most of them are ripped. Most of those games are made by people who are too lazy to learn the language and just decide to get a source and "make their game" (I use this term very loosely here) so that they can be GM, Admin, or some sort of high position in the game. They all like to control people basically and don't take the time to actually make their games at least playable. They just copy the files and change the world's name and make their friends or whatever administrators on "their" game.

Why bother making something from scratch when you can rip some anime game and make a few hundred dollars from "donations?"

Some people are competent developers who own a fangame that doesn't support subscriptions to '[name] Games' that just so happens to attatch to certain anime games. Many other anime developers meet these same standards. |
I've watched about 90% of BYOND's decent developers leave the site in frustration since 2005 because of anime games. Previous to that, the anime games on BYOND were relegated in a far off corner where nobody had to see them, but then the guild system and members front page came about and that's all everyone could see.
BYOND then became BYOND anime, and most people's net dreams died. The saddest thing is that this actually did make the site grow. But as was evidenced with the Funimation CnD order, growth based on anime games isn't all it's cracked up to be. This is why so many "oldbie" BYONDers were such stalwart defenders of this years site changes. Fangames are back at the kids table where they belong, and good riddance. Maybe some developers with half a brain will now begin to crawl out of the woodwork. |
I actually agree with you 100% after what you said. If I saw a bunch of "meh" looking original games on Byond with my Dial-up (Spent time wisely cause it sucks up a lot of time) I would have just up and left, but Wait! Is that a Megaman Battle Network game? It's multiplayer? I log in and my lag is very little - none. (Thanks to byond graphics and all.)
I meet new people and train as much as I can. (Okay, maybe that wasn't such a wise investment of time lol. I Was young and easy to please.) Now I'm looking forward to creating original and visually appealing games that could at least draw people in different ways I haven't seen Byond tackle. Things like advertising your game series with a small 3-5 page comic, a little fanfic (If it's your series, then it's not technically a "fan" fiction), or perhaps even a Tv Show (joking.) You'd be surprised what even a little can do, most people don't want to spend a chuck of their time reading something they don't know anyway, so small short things like a few pages of a web comic, or a great drawing with a paragraph of a luring novel about your game series below playing out the picture above. Little candies like this can draw people in and stir their interest. One problem is how much longer can Byond hold onto to listing copyrighted franchise fangames? The Funimation thing was disappointing for DBZ and Naruto fans (Not at all affecting me), but how do other companies look at our little fan games? Either way, I think fangames are a great way to lure in people Byond could never get on it's own and eventually they'll want to create their own games. Last note: I personally think fangames are great to start for creating Byond games, the series, attacks, etc is all there. I'd rather not destroy my good original ideas on a bad/buggy game limited by my coding skills. (Example: "That's not a megaman game." It's obvious because a standard is already set. "I can't shoot without parts of the blast missing...No point in hanging around here if bullets disappear.." *logs out for good* *negative original game status*) You should know that no game is completely perfect, but if your original game is suffering from your basic coding knowledge, why not tackle something familiar? Besides set series/worlds offer you goals to achieve in coding on a silver plate. |

I joined BYOND because of a Naruto rip. Nbotls to be exact. I joined BYOND to play a fan-game, but it was by Unknown Person so I feel a little bit better about myself. |
They lack a certain maturity, in game design, execution and typically presentation too. The usability almost always shot right through and atrocious and the games rarely hold a sticking point beyond teenage status.
I say this as the last guildmaster of BYOND Anime, and having to deal with the genre as a whole and anime game submissions on a regular basis. Their immaturity in terms of execution is something BYOND should not be trying to show off. It rings back well to Jared's comments. |

I've been here since 05 - if fan-games were the key to BYOND gaining more great developers, we would have them by now. Instead, it brings in more 10-13 year olds who just want to punch bags and activate sharingans, and if they do just so happen to want to make a game, they take infamous shortcut: find a source, make themselves an admin, and declare the game as their own. Then, within the same week, they leave yet another "wats da code 4 piccolo beem?" post on the forums. No. Just, no. |
The only real problem with fan games on BYOND is that roughly 65% of them were rips of one source or another.
If the incompetent children that ran these games never leaked the source to other incompetent children, BYOND wouldn't have had as bad as a problem as it did. That's to my speculation, at least. |

It wasn't a total rip(only icons were ripped), but I'd not be here attempting to make games without the fangames. Many, many developers have openly stated this fact. Eternia, one of the most looked forward to games at the moment, wouldn't be around without the same Dragonball game I joined for. |
This is of course no surprise, as that's where most of the BYOND base came from.
However to credit fan-games with inspiring or causing original works is like crediting women with inspiring all modern inventions, as they give birth to people who sometimes become inventors. The logic kind of works, but it was hardly an active or concerted effort on their part, it's a passive side-effect. If we had loads of bullet-hell games and bullet-hell fans, you'd be saying "I'd not be here attempting to make games without bullet-hell clones". |
