It's a well-made throwback to old NES RPGs. It's also pretty challenging since even at later levels enemies can still easily beat you.

I second Regressia, but NEStalgia is really nice for a MMO-like game with the 8-bit style. If you like to actually roleplay, I enjoy Cow RP as well.

There's a website, Regressia.tk, with a tutorial and walkthrough. It also has information on all the items and monsters (well, except some well hidden optional ones).

The environment is hostile on purpose. If there were nothing to be afraid of, then the game would be dull and uneventful. Pull up them socks and grab a sword next time you go sailing about. ;)
