Okay, so I've been working on my own project for a bit now (Solo now by the way). The project is purely for fun and I consider it a hobby on the side of my day to day life. The code of the game is good and moving along just fine. My dilemma is this, I have two art styles I've been tinkering with(I'm not the best pixel artist!) and will shortly show them!
I had hired hands awhile back, but I found he was a thief and did away with him. I then myself continued on alone. Any who, on one hand I have an 8-bit styled look with my own touch, I'm not completely loyal to old school pallets. The second style is my own I guess, I don't know what to call it and at times I hate it.
Here is the first one! (8-bit themed kinda)
The second of my own, I think.
I say "I think" because, my tile sets still may have stolen pixel work, from previous unhelpful people >.>. If I do continue to work with them, I'm sure I would eventually find all of it and remove it(The tile sets not the person XD). Aside from that incident, I have been going back and forth of what art I should stick to.
My last blog post was close to home on this subject because I feel the 8-bit style is more polished. While the other looks more detailed and standard. I have arguments for both sides really, and I just keep updating both as I go(Very counterproductive I know..).
For the 8-bitish style, I feel it may throw some people off. Not to mention with NEStalgia latest success(Which I'm happy for!) I almost feel like I'm hopping on there success and gonna feed off it. Another thing is their easy to make...but big icons are hard to work with sometimes.
My own work is so so, It looks good to me sometimes. I don't know whether I like it or not. I mentioned before I'm not the best at pixel artist, so I mix up pillow shading and all kinds of other things. Anyways, I made this blog post longer then I wanted. Any feedback would be nice, as long as I'm not getting flamed.
That's all I guess...thanks for reading :D!

Just because NEStalgia is 8-bit doesn't mean your game can't be. Personally I prefer the 8-bit style and everything I've done is 8-bit.

I prefer the 8-bit styled one. If you make your characters in the second shot go into the street, the whole tile will look incredibly busy. Plus it will likely be easier for you to do the first style, and since you're working by yourself you'll need all the ease you can get.

Some things in the 8-bit picture (particularly the dirt path) clash terribly because they aren't double pixel size like everything else. Nothing really clashes in the second picture. Whichever style you feel like using is what style you should use. No style is superior to another. However, just make sure there aren't such glaringly obviously mistakes like the dirt path in the first picture. Stuff like that makes me cringe when I play games.
