ASCII

by Magicsofa

ASCIIASCII - At Symbol Causes Inexcusable Injuries - is a fast-paced and addicting shooter developed by Magicsofa and released in mid December. Players can take to playing by themselves or going multiplayer to fight waves of enemies on six different maps, using a plethora of different power-ups.

ASCII is one of very few games that utilize BYOND's text mode. The players and maps are rendered using text characters rather than pixelated graphics. Despite this, it manages to be visually pleasing and the gameplay is very smooth.

For those with a competitive edge to them, a leaderboard exists to climb to the top of.

Magicsofa has mentioned an update forthcoming featuring a new game mode, customization, and new music tracks.

Apologies on the lateness of this article, I got sidetracked a lot and had a few technical issues.
This game was actually a ton of fun I played it the first time.
Simple but addictive, which is just the type of games that BYOND needs! :)

Indeed. It's especially fun to play with others. =)
i looked at it seeing what i thought would be a boring low graphic 2d game once i actually played it i was overly surprised gotta play this game go ply it have a great time i leave you with...DOTS....................................................
Thanks so much for the feature LordAndrew, and I say better late than never (there's still three more weeks of January and that's more publicity than I was expecting at this point :D)

Also thanks to everyone who has played and enjoyed the game.

I'm pleased to announce that I just finished my next update, which includes Team DM mode meaning you get to shoot each other too :D I will warn everyone however, that this mode might have some bugs because I wasn't able to test it as much as I would like. So if y'all could try out my server and report any bugs if they happen I would appreciate it a lot!

EDIT: Well, I've discovered a major bug with maintaining the list of players/scores. This breaks a lot of things in either game mode - I have a good idea of what is going on so I should be able to fix it by tonight. Until then y'all will just have to settle for single player :(
this is the dumbest game i have ever see in mah life -_-
I'm with Chillyspace; when I first saw this game posted on the forums, I didn't know what to expect. Screenshots really don't do the mechanics of this game justice, because they just feel so right you have to try it yourself.

It definitely reminds me of classic arcade games with its "grid-based yet somehow smooth" movement and responsive controls. It also has a good amount of content; with a fair number of playable maps, power-ups, enemies types, and terrain features. An awesome (and sufficiently retro) soundtrack will have you bobbing your head as you take out the waves of enemies.

You can tell Magicsofa put a lot of thought into the game because of the little details, like an option to skip up to the first nine waves and jump right into the more frenzied action.

I haven't had a chance to play it online yet, but I'm hoping to find some time to. Also looking forward to those new game modes.

Keep up the good work, Magicsofa!

LOL...welcome to byond!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've made another update, and I'm going to make a second pass at hosting a PVP server, which should be less buggy XD

It seems my posts aren't showing up in the "game updates" section...not sure why...

Are you checking the "Crosspost to main forums (when available)" box?
I'm extremely glad that this got featured! I've been watching it for a decent amount of time. Great music, sweet game play, and sexy to boot.

Oh, I suppose not...so only a new thread will show up in game updates? That would make sense - otherwise every comment would bump it up...
