I'm really into this genre, maybe even more-so than 3D shooters.
Soldat looks awesome, but I can't get it to run for some reason.
I've played two others: Dark War II and Halo Zero.
Halo Zero pissed me off. It was pretty easy, the AI sucked, and I won the entire damn thing in an hour!
Dark War has some BAD ASS physics in it, and I think I like the down and up being for aiming better than the mouse, because with the mouse, it's just too easy with side scrollers. The graphics are cool too. Thing I hate about it, though, is that it makes you stand in the same screen while it showers enemies at you, and it has a total of like 4 friggen monsters. The monsters AI suck pretty bad, too. So physics are good, the actual game kinda sucks. It's still a lot of fun, but they could improve it a lot.
Anyone know of some good side scroll shooters out there? Mainly one that's like Dark War II but with better gameplay, and a real campaign?

There is a mod for HL2 that is a sidescrolling shooter. Not too shabby, short, but free. Granted, to even install HL2 you have to have some decent system specs.
