One year ago today, maptext was released.
Dec 2, 2011 - BYOND 494.1120 Maptext
link
A very necessary feature we all had been waiting for, for a long time! I think it would be wise to maybe bring up the current issues with maptext to see if we can't bring some attention to this great feature, and get it working 100%!
Happy Birthday, maptext!

Confirmed issue: it was never implemented to the level we hoped it to be, even after much discussion and many complaints. I can see that you really appreciate, and are grateful for all the hard work that has gone into BYOND, a totally free software suite. |
Most custom made fonts do not render properly at sizes below 12px, and we don't have drop shadow support (which you need when you're displaying text over a screen that could contain any color pixel to prevent color masking and to promote text readability).
Those are the current issues, for me. |
I agree that those are issues, I was just being a smart-a** toward cloud magic because I found their comment to be more like "I'm a spoiled brat" than "It could be improved"

I'm appreciative, I just don't like being told that they'll implement a feature then never implement it, such as hyperlinks. Feels bad man They implemented the feature, it just doesn't do all that you thought it would. More-so disappointment. |

^ all of these will never happen. Do you have proof that it'll never happen? I hope not. And just because it doesn't work the way you want it to doesn't mean it won't be missed later on. Give them time. |

The way the maptext starts at the bottom of its bounding box and works its way up is erratic and awkward. It would be nice if the feature was more user-friendly, but BYOND generally doesn't pride itself for being intuitive Everything in byond uses the "bottom left to top right" coordinate system. So it makes sense that maptext is like this. Its weird, I agree, but it would be more weird to have a different coordinate system just for maptext. I agree that we need maptext_x and maptext_y as well as border, background, and drop shadow support. |
In an OOP language, maptext should be a datum. It'd make sense like this in the stddef.dm:
