The talk about Shadows of Erdrick isn't a good topic with me as it is NOT my game. I do NOT take owner ship of it and do NOT care about it's place on byond.
I only care about my projects and projects others have put the time into to make high quality. Very few fan games do fit this description. Final Fantasy Legacy though the code has been handed over many times is a decent game. Dragon Warrior Online stays true to it's roots and is a well designed game (remember that game Silk, you started much of your fame on byond with a fangame).

I only brought it up because you were concerned about it in your latest blog post. To tell you the truth, I couldn't name the person or persons who made that game if you put a gun to my head. I logged in once a long time ago and quickly closed my Dream Seeker in disgust.

Indeed I did... but as you note, it wasn't just any fan game. I invested the time and effort required to do it right. While my player base at the time was all thanks it being a Dragon Warrior fan game, the recognition I received as a capable designer was based upon my demonstrated talent and work ethic.

I created a fan game for the right reasons, and not because I was too lazy to create my own assets. I don't begrudge anyone who follows the same path.
Feval, that's just low. Bombrman would have been highly more appropriate.
I had an original game I was making a long time ago. It died do to my lack of tile icon graphic skills and not being able to have a dedicated graphic artist. I am hoping after War of the Magi comes out it will build up a new player base. The game is on a level much higher then anything I attempted before. As much work is going into is most top notch Byond games have. I have learned many great new styles of doing graphical systems that when I finally do get back to my original project, it will have a professional quality to it, and perhaps I will have gained a player base with War of the Magi.

And yes, Shadows of Erdrick is an ugly game. It's players love it for some reason. Go figure.
All I can say is this...Anime games are how all these people probably found byond. You can't sit here and complain about fan games being a disease because they have a favorable name people like...that's the whole reason how I found byond years ago. I typed in Yu-Gi-Oh games, and I saw Kajika's game.

Yes...3497347 hubs with DBZ Ultimate Shadow of Naruto's Brother needs to go away...but just simply ruling out any anime game of being featured is dumb. I all for original ideas like Nestalgia...but half the people who found byond...found it for anime. Let's not turn byond into those online games like Runescape...but in 2-D.

And I saw a post Silk that you said you "earned" your players, you have no idea if those players play anime games, some probably do. So what I'm asking is, lets say the anime kiddies stay on byond and they come to your game, is that still earning them? I'm not being hateful about anything, I just realize that if I'm going to play adventure games like Nestalgia...I'm going to find it in 3-D...that's why anime is great for byond...no one hardly wants to play 2-D games unless its something familiar...

Anime kids do not play my game. They rarely even log in, and when they do they usually leave after they find out that it's a real game an not some piece of crap that lets you dress up like Goku and click a button to do pushups.

NEStalgia is an MORPG. Whether it's 2D or 3D is irrelevant; only 14 year olds care about that sort of crap. All that matters is how well it plays and how fun it is.

There is a huge audience for 2D games out there. NEStalgia has already begun to tap into it, and now that all of the mindless anime kiddies are out of the way it will be much easier to present BYOND as a serious development platform.
Retro games are gaining popularity again. Mega Man has went back to its 8bit roots again. Classic style 2D games have a feel that will always appeal to a large number of players.
Silk...you have no idea what your members play...at all. And if someone wants to dress up like goku and click a button to do push ups, then who cares?

Sounds like to me your hating on success of anime games because they arent "original" ideas. If that's what people want to play, then that's what they want to play.

If you take anything out of any of this take this...if they didn't play your game before...they wont play it now. No matter if they take anime games out...your type of game isn't what the masses want...and the masses are what matter. I agree with you some what, but this isn't going to help your game get players...its going to help byond.

And to be frankly honest...I wouldn't care at all if my business attracted the "mindless anime kiddies"...if they are giving up $15 or how ever much is it is now to get 347347 levels in a game, then let more anime games exist. I agree with getting rid of the rips, but I do not agree with trying to rid byond of anime.

Even if that number never changes after I start to market the game outside BYOND, I still earned every last player in NEStalgia. There isn't a single anime game on BYOND that earned its players: take away the title and you'd see zeros next to all of them, because the games themselves are embarrassingly bad.

Let's not forget you are using the NES title to help garner players, too. But it would be wrong to discredit your hard work based on that, right?

Now that fan-games have been removed from the main page, naturally this will make fan-games more difficult to find. For those who are looking for fan-games though, this simply makes things difficult for them. I cannot see it doing any more than that.

However, I wouldn't mind hearing how this could help original developers. I'm not entirely convinced at the moment. Has NEStalgia seen an increase in players ever since the changes were introduced?

You're comparing apples and oranges. NES even by itself is just an acronym for an object. Used in "NEStalgia" it's just a descriptor - a play on words.

That would be like calling "World of Warcraft" a fan game for the World, simply because it uses that word in the title ;)

Yup. We've seen a fair amount of new players, and my subscription revenue has increased. I also know that Decadence received a large bump.

Keep in mind that while the increase in attention from existing BYONDers is nice, the real idea is to make BYOND look much more legitimate and appealing to new users. When I start to market NEStalgia to the outside world I'm going to have a much easier time now that BYOND itself isn't plagued by fan games in the featured listings.
You realize fan games help bring in players from outside. They are not a plague as much as rips are. A good quality fan game helps bring in quite a bit of new players to Byond as they come to play something they are familar with and feel safe playing, then they move on to more original titles. Your DWO has brought in many of Byond rpg players. If you never worked on DWO you wouldn't be seeing near the player base you have now. While we want to promote original games, note that fan games are not a problem unless they are completely stolen from other developers (code as well graphics) and are done poorly to the game or series they emulate.
Agent Smith was at all necessary? All I can think of now is.....

Mr. Anderson.

Wonderful. Did this have anything to due with the Matrix Trilogy being on tv? I know I saw the third one on tv guide channel.*

*-Recently moved, and as a result don't know any of the channels. I had to work, and so missed the NFL Conference championships. I was looking for ESPN at the time.
