Pros of sticking with version 1: *easier overall to work with *nearly completed Pros of moving to version 2: *higher quality *better animations Feed back please! -Zane |

Consider actually releasing your game sometime before the second coming of Jesus.
|
The game is ready for a release by BYOND's standards, just not mine.
Also it has only been a year since i started development a mere infant when compared to the development period of some of BYOND's upcoming great games.but yeah,it'll be released before then haha. |
I think it would be better to release the game as it is and improve the quality of sprites through updates.

Maybe, but as it stands if i were to wait until a release the workload would increase greatly as i would have to replace a larger amount of sprites, which would include replacing overlays, which i leave for last and have yet to start.
Im still on the fence with going through with it at this point.. |
Well, I can see that there is a dramatic difference in quality between the two sprites. If you were to redo the current icons, how many sprites are we talking?
If it's not a huge amount, then go for it. |

Makes sense.Uhm,the base itself is a huge file(still incomplete with 75+ base states with 4-16 frame animations)about 20 tile sets, and along with the techniques 4 individual techniques per release.basically a year of working consistently,so yeah a hell of a lot of work.
@stephen001 I get what your saying and it makes a lot of sense, one of my main concerns with going with the revamp is me losing motivation midway through.where after i would turn back to the simpler art style.what this would mean that i would have lost months of work that couldve pushed BR closer to a release. A tough decision no doubt =S |
Old one. While the new one might be a bit better is not that much. You already have a lot of icons so just stick with what you got and in the future update the graphics if needed.
|
A years work? I think the answer is obvious then. =P
Whatever you decide, good luck with your project. |
Use version two, you'll put yourself on a new level from the people using you're current alpha icon as a reference.

From what I've seen in a lot of MMO's, developers update the graphics after the game has been out. Choose the other path of revamping and expect nobody to care when it finally comes out in 2085.
|
Revamp for obvious reasons, releasing something on a higher art standard on byond would be great for it :)

Branks hits the nature of the problem pretty much spot on. It's very easy with your hobby to dream of building sky castles, however the people appreciate a game they can actually play now first and foremost. |
Stick with the old. They may not be as high quality, but if the are nearly completed use them for now. Think of the old ones like placeholders, you can always revamp them later on and the game can be in released to pubic sooner.

Old one looks fine to me. Since it's pixel art if you double the height of the icon you also double the amount of work you have to do. I'd rather see this game out ASAP so I can enjoy it rather than waiting an extra year or two!

I say go with version one. Though version two is much more visually appealing, there are many drawbacks. Let me list them as they come into my mind.
- It is too large. Though that is one of it's felicitations, it is also the base's shortcoming. Even as a fullscreen game it's still not enough. According to slashdot, yahoo and answers.com the average screen resolution is roughly 800x600 or 1024x768. Now even though that is a lot of free space, the game is going to give the player a feeling of being "crowded" rather easily. This is going to be even worse if you do not plan on using pixel movement. - Style. I'm assuming from what I have seen so far that this game is going to have a lot of fighting. This style of pixel art is much too... cute and friendly to be taken seriously in my opinion. I simply cannot picture that being used in a game with blood effects! That is like taking the game "Dante's Inferno" and replacing the main character, Dante, with a cute fluffy kitten to battle the monstrous, hideous, demons of hell. - This game is not even finished. Don't revamp anything yet. If you have reached a standstill in the game it is obviously not due to pixel art, since you're already deciding to redo a base. If it's programmers, keep an open mind to hiring some more programmers. I'm sure there are MANY prominent programmers on BYOND that are willing to work for a game with such wonderful visual aspects. - Many people on BYOND, including myself want to see this game out in the open to play! Hell you guys already have a waiting list as the game hasn't even open tested yet! Stalling this game anymore would not be something anyone on BYOND is looking forward to. - You're skills are constantly getting better, of course that is going to look better. If you are honestly concerned about your amazing pixel art becoming ugly and outdated, just touch up your old work. Speaking as a pixel artist, You will be surprised how much better you have gotten and how much better your work can look. |
