Kids interested in BYOND

I had some guests over for dinner the other night and they brought their two sons, one 6, the other 10. I was talking to the 10 year old about games, specifically Atmosphir and Roblox, and out of the blue he asked me if I had ever heard of BYOND.

I was pretty surprised. Turns out he was searching for a Pokemon game or something and stumbled across it. He has a lot of interest in game design and I was excited to hear that he had discovered BYOND. We started talking about DM and I was explaining how much more powerful something like this was compared to drag and drop level designing stuff like Atmosphir, yet also a lot more difficult. When I started to explain object oriented programming to him I think I scared him away a little, as he eventually just said that he wants to try something easier first before getting into the more difficult stuff.

It was still very amusing and made me smile though. :-)

A 10 year old needs to stay far away from this site. As a matter of fact, anyone who is serious about making games needs to stay away from this site. The program is good but the actual way the website is put together along with the shit community... it wouldn't benefit him or anyone else at all.

Actually, in regards to the BYOND community and forums, I agree to a point. When I was discussing BYOND with his father, I explained that it was a really cool thing that his son was interested in it, but suggested he check which games the son played and made sure he avoided the forums and community pages due to the general level of immaturity and crudeness. This can basically be said about anything your 10 year old son is doing online though.

No. I'm just a troll. All I'm capable of is nonsense.

If BYOND is to ever get anywhere, the people with so-called "intelligence" and "maturity" need to start producing games.

However, that barely happens. There are only a handful of quality games on BYOND being played, created, or supported. Compare that to the actual number of people on BYOND who think they're talented and better than everyone else but never really create shit.

Yeah.

There is so much focus and blame being put on "trolls" when the people who can actually make a difference on BYOND greatly outnumber those of us who just come to troll. So no, trolls aren't destroying BYOND. People with the ability to make BYOND a better place but choose not to are destroying BYOND.

Lol, it'll be more than just fan game fans flooding the forums with panic threads. I foresee lots of threads along the lines of general "WTF HAPPENED TO THE GUILDS?!?!?!?!" and "HOW THE HELL DO I FIND GAMES OF RPG/CASUAL/[insert genre here] NOW?". I would like to think that everyone would immediately realize how to use the Tags box in the games listing, but sadly I know better than to place any hope in intelligence from many members of the community.

I just hope that with this new update BYOND expands its web presence past searches for anime MMO's or else this new update will do zilch for original game development. After all, you can't increase the development of original games when your main source of traffic comes from Google searches for "[insert trademarked name here] MMO" (honestly that's how I got here lol).

I doubt it'll happen anytime soon. If anything, prepare for the biggest BYOND crisis that's going to unravel in the next update. I expect only the most gruesome twenty-four hour riots, and protesting from little kids attempting to revive Anime in BYOND.

If you want a serious discussion, then I disagree. The thing BYOND needs most right now are new people who aren't in it JUST for anime games, but actual serious developers that are smart enough to make a good game but stupid enough not to find a better community. BYOND has potential, a lot being held back. What we need now are more diverse people, instead of 95% of BYOND being anime-fans attempting to create fan games. The more people the more diversity we get, and the more diversity we get the higher chances someone will bring out the jackpot in production.

Just because it's a shit community now doesn't mean we can't change, but thinking we're hopeless won't change anything.

Seems like a battle of extremes. For once there are opposing viewpoints that I actually enjoy reading (Zack vs Empire). However, I'll note that any other child(age mate) I remember from 02 that still uses byond grew up and became a great developer.

Bring the 10 years old here. Plant the seed early. Invest in the future. Where there is room for growth there is attachment. If they grow here they wont go anywhere...lol.
