What about my hair Stephen?
Always an exhilarating thing to observe.

Not a stab, but ironically I did do a podcast called Byondcast a few years back, it numbered about 9 I think, and was terrible (more of a thing to get out of my phone-talking phobia and talk about my own games more than anything).
Edit: Whoops, Airjoe already mentioned it XD. Still, it was good, and we both know we don't tend to get along (if I'm noteworthy enough for you to still hate me :p). |
Simply hilarious. Especially the comments about Geldonyeitch. I couldn't agree with you more about him.
Just some quick corrections however: 1. This isn't the first podcast ( Acebloke was first and I was second ) 2. The rap wasn't about you, it was simply an intro song. Stephen actually gave me the idea to do the rap song. 3. I took my blog down but the video can still be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/byondpodcast ( it has 62 hits, not 3 ) Also, I probably won't be making any more of those. I just did it because I was bored. If you want to use that YouTube account I'll give you the password to it. But now to address the comments you made towards me. When I troll, I do it for attention and personal satisfaction. What fun is trolling when no one is paying attention to you? You guys mentioned me in your very first podcast - I couldn't be more happy right now. All my efforts paid off because now I know people were actually clicking on my members page to read my nonsense and watch my useless podcast videos. I wouldn't be able to perform unless I had the beloved BYOND community to be my dedicated audience members. =) |
Hah, I was wondering when the obligatory "I told you so" was coming.
I really enjoyed the podcast. You guys have a great rapport. I hope you continue to do them. The bit on the procrastination blog was hilarious, albeit a little mean spirited (but I'm sure Geld has been around long enough to recognize your shtick). I find your jabs at Forum_account inconsistent with your desire for original games, considering that he is one of the few users consistently supplying the community with new games and ideas. I've had my issues with him-- just like I have with you-- but I will always overlook personal squabbles in favor of intelligent contributions. Keep these up. If you manage to do one without mocking the community, we could even feature it on the front page! Although I'm not sure exactly what you'd talk about then. |
You guys should totally make this a weekly/biweekly thing, it was a really good listen. You might have trouble finding news on BYOND every week, though.

I'm also glad that people have actually picked on on the fact that a lot of our ranting is indeed a "shtick" instead of getting up in arms about it! Tom wrote: I find your jabs at Forum_account inconsistent with your desire for original games, considering that he is one of the few users consistently supplying the community with new games and ideas. Good point. With my rant I was really just targeting his pixel movement obsession; I didn't remember that he's actually made other cool stuff in the past few months, which was probably worth mentioning. Tom wrote: Keep these up. If you manage to do one without mocking the community, we could even feature it on the front page! Although I'm not sure exactly what you'd talk about then. Yeah doing a toned down official version of this would be fun, but probably not doable. Our main strength is talking off the cuff and just going with it. I think that if we had to constantly be worried about going too negative or cleaning up some of the banter, it would take away from that. But who knows, maybe there will be enough positive stuff happening on BYOND at some point that we'll be able to put together an entire podcast just talking about the stuff that we like :) Stephen001 wrote: Although you won't have the benefit of time with a guest to build that up completely, there's a lot to be said to dedicating a little chat time beforehand to pick up your guest's habits and nuances. Good call - having a dry run with guests before starting the show is definitely the way to go. Acebloke wrote: Not a stab, but ironically I did do a podcast called Byondcast a few years back Yeah I probably should have done a quick search before calling it the first BYOND podcast. Oops! Doing it biweekly would be fun, and we could easily manage it with our schedules since it doesn't take any real planning or time to create. |

The bait is too reserved and the follow-up is too nice. But anyhow your podcast was real good! |
Finished the podcast. Good stuff! I'm not sure who's the first to come up with the idea Forum_account is Onefishdown, but I did ask him, and he said he wasn't. It was something about their IP addresses conflicting in Chatters. I doubt he is.
God bless. |
I've only played Proelium maybe twice. Most of my early days on BYOND were spent playing crappy DBZ games or Builder's Fantasy. I believe somewhere along the way you must have merged the "idea" of SuperAntx with your feelings towards trolls in general.
One thing I wish to make clear is I never troll or grief inside games. I may make a snide remark here and there like everyone else, but I've never done something warranting a ban. This is mostly why I was so angry when you banned me from NEStalgia despite being a generally good player who reported bugs when encountering them. In the future, if you're going to talk down to someone please be accurate with what you're saying. -SAx |
I'm not sure where people got the idea that I'm developing games that are strictly single player. I try to develop games that can be enjoyed by a single person. Some of my projects might not have multiplayer modes yet but that's not because I'm keeping them strictly single player. You actually mentioned my reason for doing this in the podcast. You said that Decadence is a good game but nobody plays it. It's not likely that any of my games would attract a large audience so it would be a terrible idea to design them to require multiple human players - the best case is that my game would end up like Decadence. I'd rather have a game that people can enjoy by themselves, at least I can enjoy my own games then too.
I also don't think it's such a sin to circumvent some of BYOND's built-in features. BYOND does much more than provide a tile-based movement engine and handle the network communication. It also handles sounds, graphics, maps, and user input. The only feature of BYOND I'm strictly ignoring in my recent projects is the tile-based movement. I don't think people realize how limiting tile-based movement is. There was never a period of time (not even a long time ago) where the majority of games used tile-based movement. It's use always tended to be for non-action games, usually RPGs. This interview with IainPeregrine (specifically his response to "What would you change in BYOND?") is what got me thinking about a pixel movement/sidescoller demo or library. BYOND can handle these kinds of games and people are trying (or are at least wanting) to make these games. I've seen a few attempts at Mega Man and Zelda games. I suspect there are two big reasons why these games don't get finished. First, most projects end up abandoned. Second, the engines for these games are harder to develop and use. The time spent developing the engine and the problems with using the engine can quickly deplete your motivation. I can only help with the second reason so I started to create a platformer engine. I've seen a few people using it already. I know that Doomed Dreams uses it. Pascal's Challenge uses some part of it and I'm not sure if The Magic Man is using it in his recent project. With my projects that use it I'm trying to show that it's more than just a technical demo (like Vengeance 56 is) and it can be used to develop actual games. Edit: I also think part of this is a different view of BYOND. Many people seem to view BYOND as a nice platform for developing online RPGs. While it is good for that, I don't think that's BYOND's niche. I think BYOND's best quality is that it makes programming and game development accessible to a younger or less technical audience. I agree that better suites exist for developing my own platformer but that's not my goal. My goal is to make the development of platformers more accessible. For this purpose I think it makes perfect sense to use BYOND. |
Wish I could listen to it, but I have a final tonight, then cigar shop time. I'll try to remember to listen when I get home(someone else commenting after me would definitely remind me).

Okay, listened to the podcast...to the racism on Seika(Teridal, whatever). I think I'm responsible in part with the "racist" demeanor of the fan base. When I was younger(think 13-15), I went through the phase where pseudo-racism was "haha funny." Back then there was an in-tact moderation team. I was disciplined, but this was an era when most of BYOND's player base were little racist kids(Pre-Anime, when there were players on BYOND). As "my generation" developed into the "oldies" in the game, the younger players looked up to us, and adopted our racist patterns.
This wasn't behavior exclusive to Seika. Back then, I played that, Castle, and your Proelium. I was just as racist on the other games as I was on Seika. I'm not trying to be insulting here, but the reason this racism is still apparent in Teridal is because the fan base never completely died. Most of the games that came into popularity back in the day have no sustainable fan base. seeing someone on Castle or Proelium is a rarity anymore. Teridal, however has always had a small, but nonetheless visible fan base. As a result, the seeds I sewed back in the day are still being reaped by the trickle of new players that stick around. EDIT: That's solely for that game, not Feval or anything like that. |
I severely disagree with everything you said about Dragon Quest being worse than it used to be, and I find it weird that you spend a large portion of the Podcast badmouthing specific users of BYOND.
But it was entertaining I guess. If you really want to talk about somebody, I suggest Android Data- and how he threatened to sue people on the Bay12 forums for supposedly ripping him off by making a Cowed-esque game under the name "Dwarfed" (Even though Cowed is more or less a shitty knock off of another game that was shitty in the first place.) This guy is running (and ruining) the RPG guild, mind you. |
Ahahaha, that Android Data Bay12 drama was hilarious, I forgot all about it. Some Android Data flaming in the next podcast would be awesome. Also, you could dig up that 2009 drama between you and Iain and try and prove that you ARE an ethical person, Silk.
