These are redesigned sprites made for one of my projects, Pillage! I'm thinking about converting it to a turn based/real time strategy combination.
Looks nice.
Although, what I first noticed was that the green and blue guys look flat and has the "sticker" appearance, which Kumorii brought up. While the human character has more depth and detail, so he doesn't look as flat. Which looks strange with the white outlines. |
I'm thinking about animating them with the outlines, yes. I'm not sure why the others appear to be in less detail/perspective than 4 and 5. The only difference between the human and nonhuman sprites is one highlight. I guess that seems to make a big difference. Im not sure if I should add the highlights to the others or take away the highlights from the humans.

Then remove that highlight from #4. Lastly, place both versions next to each other and show us it. Perhaps we could help you make a choice. |

Hmm, I sort of like them without the highlight a bit more. Likewise, nice work! |
Well you're correct, light does scatter. Keep in mind though this is a cartoon style, not realistic. Also if you zoom in you'll notice there isn't really any room nor need for more highlights. At this size you wouldnt even notice scattered light pixels.

Boxcar is certainly one of the better pixel artists on BYOND.
The thing I hate most about reading through Art & Sound is that most people say "Your art isn't like this, so it's wrong." That's the beautiful thing about art. As long as it's consistent, it's up to the artist and his/her interpretation as to what he/she wants to do. Art is like an opinion. It can't be wrong. ;) |

If I create a piece from my imagination, and just let it be that, then it's correct. My teacher had a master's degree in graphic design, and he taught us that no art can be wrong. If I try to copy a car, and the result isn't the same as the car, then it's because the technique was wrong. If this is his style, and he's happy with it, then it's correct. Bringing sales into art is business, and not very creative. |
Thanks for the kind words Jake. Here's the beginnings of the animations for one of these sprites.

the crouch moves a little odd it jerks (no pun intended) and so do the shoulder pads just a bit they move smoother going back then they do when they are moveing fowards.
This is just my observation you may have already noticed this and fixed it or that may your desired effect but it is looking good. ill do a edit if i have time |
No, that's the ultimatum of creating what you want. You're trying to merge technique and style into one thing, and that's a bit off. By your ideals, anything that isn't 100% realistically correct, is wrong art. I hate to break it to you, but that's close minded.
1) Manga and Anime must be wrong 2) Any cartoons must be wrong 3) Contour drawing must be wrong The list can go on and on, styles have no real limit. His style is unique, just like games such as Paper Mario used flat, paper like art, but it still worked and was still visually appealing. His art looks more like stickers, and even then the way he created the people within those stickers is unique to his style. Are they realistic? No. Are they fun to look at? For some people, yes. You have my idea pretty spot on. Technique can be wrong, art cannot. |
Post a edit or something helpful or just stop your derailing ways this is not what the post is about help the poster make his art better or GTFO also if your such a pro post some of your art and you can talk about how it is so perfect and we will all clap are hands

+1 PixelRat. This is an A&S post, not some theory of art class.
The initial animation looks like a good start. The leg join needs some work as it seems to shift a bit at the crotch. Also, the step animation could probably be improved with some horizontal leg movement (legs tend to pull towards the center of gravity as they are the source of balance). Right now it looks a bit like they just shuffle back and forth. |
I love the "sticker" appearance they have.
