I thought I'd give World of Warcraft a try, so I picked up one of those $2 Trial Edition packs.
After looking at all the info the Trail Subscription seems rather limited. Chatting is limited. I can't go beyond level 20 or hold more than 10 gold. I can't make use of the auction house. Stuff like that.
Since my time is limited (14-days), I was wondering if anyone could give me some tourist tips. Things to see and do.
I'm thinking of making up a Night Elf Hunter. The whole pet thing sounds good (if I'm allowed to tame a pet with my trial limits). The ranged combat stuff also sounds alright.
At least that's what I'm planning to do if the update download is finished before this 14-days trial period expires. =P

I play a nightelf Hunter, great class, and if played right, they do a ton of damage. At level 27, I was the lowest level in the group, by over 5 levels, and there was a level 40 with us, and I did the second most damage(Second to the level 40).
I am on Koron Tor, or something like that, it is a RP non PK sever. If you if you join the server I am on, I will pull you into my guild. |
I still don't see how "RP"ing works in basically a hack 'n slash game :-/ Not that it's a bad game, mind you, but picturing people sitting around trying to pretend it's *not* about gathering experience and resources is humorous to me.
WoW seems like a game made to suck away all free time. The many quests, gear, races, skills, etc. seem to have borrowed most of the good stuff from muds and blended it with nice graphics and a functional UI. (Unlike, say, Everquest which just dropped a 3d engine on a mud system and called it a day.) The game's progression and advancement systems seem well thought out and game balance seems to be adequate. (Unlike, say, UO where griefers were rampant and eventually uncontrolled PKing and bug abuse followed by some pretty absurd "fixes" killed the player base.) But I guess that is why WoW is the current standard for persistent state online gaming. |
I've played most every MMORPG out there, and I've definitely enjoyed WoW the most.
However, night elves are teh suck. I find their starting island to be even more depressing and gloomy than the undead lands. And Jmurph, I thought the same thing until I tried an RP server. WoW actually provides so many methods of making everything feel less hack 'n slash, for those who do want to RP. It's pretty nice. |
actuly you can do alot more stuff if you get the 5 disk pack and pay to play then its much better.

If it plays like a MUD with a fancy 3D interface that's great. If MUDs weren't so boring visually I'd probably enjoy them a lot more. =P

Heh, this is exactly why I avoided playing WoW. The game is great and I'll be going out and getting the retail version in the next few days.
I'm at level 19 and appart from a few times when I've needed a few extra copper coins or a little more exp I haven't done any of the usual grinding. I've spent pretty much all my time doing quests. Speaking of coins, the coin system is actually really good. It removes that "you have [insanely large almost random number] coins" factor. For those that don't know, you've got gold, silver and copper coins. 100 copper coins equals 1 silver coin and 100 silver coins equals 1 gold coin. So instead of having 111,111 gold coins like in a standard MMORPG you've 11 gold, 11 silver and 11 copper coins. It doesn't sound like much but it stops people from running around screaming 'I want 50k for mud boots'. I haven't tried any of the other classes yet, but I don't see anything wrong with hunters. My Owl does a really good job of distracting my opponents while I attack them from a distance. It's a little annoying having to go get more arrows, but I can carry heaps of them and my close combat skills can carry me through most battles so I don't have to use arrows. I guess with the level 20 cap I might as well create some new characters and try the other races/classes. |
I downloaded WOW and started on a emulated server. That way I don't have to pay for anything.

I downloaded WOW and started on a emulated server. That way I don't have to pay for anything. I wouldn't imagine that being a top notch experience. Do they get many players? I'm finding the amount of players around adds a lot to the atmosphere. Oddly enough I'm also finding that the Horde vs Alliance stuff really makes people a lot friendlier towards allies. |
Speak for yourself Garthor I have plently of friends on BYOND.
DarkView, actully it is pretty good. I found that the offical WOW servers are kind of annoying and hard to play. The leveling takes too long and the gold and equipment drops are terrible. The emulated server I play on boosts exp and money gains, but only a little bit, to make it a much more enjoyable playing expiearance. You won't be gaining 100 levels a second, but you won't be taking 2 hours to get one level either. And actully, you would be surprised, there are actully MORE players on emulated servers then there are on the offical servers. Another thing that is nice, is that these are not offical servers, so that makes selling money hard on these kinds of games. That means players aren't buying their charaters or their gold, and it dosen't throw the rest of the game and the economy out of wack. |
there are actully MORE players on emulated servers Now I've thought about it that actually doesn't shock me at all. There are a lot of people out there who don't want to pay to play so it makes sense that free servers would be popular. Do you have much of a problem with servers dropping out of existance? I'd imagine you would lose your character if they decided to stop hosting it. Like I said before I haven't had any problems with leveling or gold/equipment. I suspect that will change when I get onto the higher levels but I'd still consider it cheating to up the EXP/Gold/Drops. I am a little tempted to checkout an emulated server just because there only seem to be three Oceanic servers. Two full servers (one PVP and one normal) and a low population PVP server (my server). How do they go with updates? Are they far behind the official servers? One last thing I was curious about, do they have extra quests and such? If they do it could help keep the game alive a little longer. I think even if I do go onto them I'll still pay to play on the offical servers. |
Id have to ask my friend, I downloaded everything, he set everything up and it took him awhile to do so.
As far as I know, the server keeps up to date with the normal WOW servers, but just like EverQuest Online, you'll need all patches and server expansions for it to work correctly. Another thing is, when WOW updates, the server has to be updates along with the emulator, so while it'll happen, it'll take longer then normal. |
Level 20 does seem pretty limited, but it does take a wee while to get there.
As for the "tourist" thing, you need get your ass off of your starting island (if you choose to play an NE) and venture into the real world. You'll be amazed at how big the WoW world actually is. But again, being low level won't help your cause in getting places.
If you're a good roleplayer, then I'd suggest getting the full thing. S'the best game I've ever bought/subscribed to.
