Asset Highlight:
Title: D4_ASE and D4_DFL
Author: d4rk354b3r
Demo: 70
Description: This is a package that includes the following:
- d4y_DFL Dynamic Filtered Lighting
- d4_ASE Ambient, Sound, Environment

This library/demo is pretty awesome and its an absolute must see. Check it out and experience weather and shadows unlike anything you've seen on BYOND. I was totally blown away by the lighting system. Simply amazing. How good will future RPG's look with this awesomeness?

I would like to note that ALL of the graphics in the D4_ASE/D4Y_DFL demo came from the free art section of the BYOND Pixel Art forums.

If you took them from the free art section of byond... Then you're just stealing those icons and selling it as your own. So basically you're library is illegal for downloading since people are paying for icons you stole... I think/
They're paying for the libary.. Not the icons.

This.

If some people really like the sprites used in the demo, it probably takes <5 minutes to direct them to the pixel art forum threads that contain them free-to-use.
Saying that people are paying for the library, not the icons, is like saying that fan games that charge for subscriptions are charging people for stat gains and not for the copyrighted material.
Forum_Account: You're over complicating this.

Darke's library has nothing to do with the art. It is the code he's selling. And either way, he's just using art which he has permission to use since it's free. Whereas fan games do not have direct permission to use the copyrighted material you brought up.

Seriously, just stop needlessly being critical when someone other than you does something. I've seen you do this every where you comment. It's just not a good rep to set for yourself.

Which is the exact argument that fan games use. They're not selling anime, they're selling stat boosts.

he's just using art which he has permission to use since it's free.

And that's exactly the problem: can you sell art that is free?

Another name for "being critical" is "giving feedback". Saying "oh that's wonderful" in response to everything that is posted would make me look like a nicer person but it doesn't help the community.
Dear Forum_account, you're misinterpreting the dilemma of copyright and trademark infringement that arises with most fan games.

With games, the art is part of the incentive to purchase the product, with a library that should not be the case. Similar to how you can sell a game created and packaged with BYOND, despite that you have no legal grounds to sell the BYOND software itself. Most of the copyright licenses applied in the free resource sector even explicitly permit the use of these resources as part of purchasable products.

As an example, I could write my own Linux distribution and sell it, despite the fact that the kernel is open sourced, as long as I do not claim to sell the kernel by itself. This is indeed a common practice.
If only there was a way these legal issues could all be avoided...
There is. When recreating the hub sorting and adding means for easy search, just include a standard, selectable, editable copyright license, like the new BSD.
That way every legal distributes are set.
PopLava would still need to investigate the content it's selling. There's no easy way to do that.

I was alluding to making the content free.

"There is always an easier way because their always has been." - tsfreaks(?)

I was alluding to making the content free.

The Resource Center will be introducing a new art submission process in v2.2 which improves the reliability of the review process.

This is hardly an issue to the project. PopLava advertises to ensure quality content to adequate prices, which requires content review regardless, but justifies taking a commission.

Everybody can distribute her property free of charge through the BYOND hub system. Since the quality of the search engine is being revised and reworked, the distribution process should become more streamlined.
