There's a hole in BYOND where Utilities used to be.
There's no place to properly list a program that does work (as in accomplishing some task, not to mean that it functions as designed), isn't a game source code or demonstration in source code, and is clearly not a game.
Where did you put the numerous utility programs? Demos? That makes no sense.
What was the point of doing away with BYOND.Utilities?

That's retarded. How does that make any sense? What was the point of removing utilities in the first place? How are we supposed to know that we have to bug the mods to publish a utility? There's no indication that non-games, other than demos or libraries, are even welcome on BYOND now.

The moderators review all hubs - all of them. Otherwise, they are not fully published on the hub. They test them, and assign tags. If you'd like more information, you could contact Lige, DarkCampainger, Keeth, Nadrew, etc.

Yeah, you guys miss the point. From OUR POINT OF VIEW as developers, there's no place on BYOND for utility programs. A tag isn't a listing category. It's a tag, like 'fail' or 'derp'. Whatever, it's your waste of time. I'll just publish everything as a game and let you deal with it according to whatever rules you've made up this week.

Oh, I'm sorry. I was under the impression that this forum was for discussing the BYOND website or programs. I don't see how this is a support issue.
According to my hub management system, there's no such thing as a utility now. We have games, demos and libraries. If I make a program that lets people create character icons, or whatever, there's no place for it to be listed, according to the hub system that currently exists. BYOND isn't tag-based. If that were really the case, there would be no categories at all. So yeah, you are missing the point. The point: There's no place to publish utilities. A demo with a 'utility' tag isn't a utility, it's a demo with some arbitrary tag attached to it. Nobody is going to expect to find a real program in demos or libraries. From our point of view (you may be too close to see this, so I'll try to make it as clear as I can) BYOND doesn't accept non-game programs. You can posts whatever you like in response, but it doesn't matter to the newbie developer who will never read this. If you want to make it clear that BYOND does accept non-game programs, you need to modify the hub management system to state this explicitly. As it stands now, there's no reason to expect anyone to publish a utility ever again. There's no listings for them anywhere. There's no category that fits them, and there's no indication that creating a non-game is even welcome in the community. A short post on the forum is no substitute for a clearly designed publication system. |
If I were in charge I'd say if people are interested and willing to make utilities then any simple changes possible to support that (such as a real subsection in libs perhaps) should be welcome.
While it is true BYOND is lacking in the peripherals department, I think there is a lot of room and potential for growth. |
I've talked to Tom about an actual utilities section, the demo+tag approach is a temporary solution until things can be updated to handle it in a better way. Previously they were listed as games but that didn't give them any visibility to developers, which are more likely to use the utilities. My suggestion to Tom was to have the new section visible to both the game side and developer side.
Until there's a better solution you'll just have to make due with what we have now. |
