It's been awhile since Dragonball Z Onslaught has been hosted. Since the game was up today I decided to take a moment to play the game and review it.
Gameplay:
For the most part, Dragonball Z Onslaught is just another basic Dragonball Z game on BYOND. It plays just how you expect it to in almost all instances.
Fighting and combat is also exactly how you'd expect it to be in a Dragonball Z game for BYOND. You have a statpanel full of commands, attacks and skills at your disposal. It eventually turns into a really big click fest.
On the flip-side, Dragonball Z Onslaught has a lot of quests you can complete in the game to earn money and experience. The only problem with this is, most of the quests are very similar and can get very repetitive very fast.
One of the quests that bothered me was one where you can to collect and catch rabbits. Why would super powerful Z-Fighters be collecting fuzzy bunnies? I think for some of the quests they could have come up with some better ideas.
Leveling up is a mixed bag. On one level, as you level up you get attribute points to spend to make your character stronger. There isn't anything new or unique about that.
But as you level up, you also gain skill points and eventually racial trait points. Gaining skills and building on them works much like World of Warcraft, you have a tech tree where you can choose from an assortment of skills and abilities.
After you have played the game for awhile, you will start to earn racial trait points, these are unique skills and abilities that your race and only your race can gain. These can be skills that increase your melee damage or how fast you regenerate your health.
Powering Up and Meditating is more then just sitting in place. It is like a mini game where you need to press the corresponding arrows in order to re-gain energy. As you meditate you will slowly earn more powerlevel, ki or restore energy. It's an interesting concept, but it gets annoying when you mess up and have to start over.
There are no indications of where monsters get stronger. You will often find yourself accidentally running into stronger monsters that are almost mixed in with the weaker monsters you can handle. This can be a overall frustrating gameplay experience. Trust me, you will die a lot.
The interface is customized, but sparsely and it works. Far too often have I logged into a BYOND game where they went overboard with the game's interface. It has an updated appearance for BYOND 4.0+ and it works well. Implementation of a built in system to handle macros would be wonderful.
Presentation:
Mostly Custom Graphics. You can tell it has relied on some source games graphics, but most have been heavily altered.
For the most part the game is a combination of source game graphics (Dragonball Zeta, Dragonball Rebirth), custom graphics and ripped industry game graphics (Legacy of Goku).
Originality:
The game is everything you've come to know and expect from a Dragonball Z game, from how the combat works, to the rampant (and often broken) PVP system.
The game tries to incorporate some new and fresh ideas into a generally over-used and tired theme for BYOND Anime, some of the concepts are successful, some are failures.
Overall:
At it's roots, it's a another one of your basic Dragonball Z games, but it is so heavily customized and modified, altered and changed, it makes for a rather enjoyable experience. If some of the more redundant practices in the game were changed or even polished, it'd be all the more better.

I agree with all the points you made, though I don't think anything is from Rebirth (don't think I have ever played that). As for your experience, It doesn't seem like you played for too much (level 12 takes maybe 10 minutes?). I have played the game in the past. Just not on this key, you are only seeing one character I have. Other character have hours if not days worth of play on it. The fact of the matter is though, you don't have to play the game all that long to understand what it is and how it's played. Actually, Majins and Mystics Remasters > Dragonball Elysium > Dragonball Rebirth I worked on the orginal Majins and Mystics Remastered as well as the other games, I am responsible for some if not most of the re-done graphics for those games. A few of the bases in the game are strikingly similar to bases I have done in the past, even if they have been altered (namely the namek). In all reality, I don't mind or care. Since I did that stuff such a long time ago and open sourced all of them. |
All of the bases were created/edits by me off of the modified(by me) white male Zeta base.

I reopened the comments. This is a public blog and i saw nothing wrong with the discussion taking place that warranted the comments being closed. You can take the snide comment + comment closing tactics to your own blog, not here.

It sort of bothers me how you're reviewing the game as if it's a normal Dragon Ball game that is trying to stick exactly to the story with its game play.
Onslaught is a PvP game, and you didn't even bother to mention any of those features. You know, the ones that actually make the game fun. Guild's, Guild Wars, Arena's, PvP leveling, etc. Poor review in the fact that it wasn't sticking to the games genre, but decent review in the sense of explaining the games basic features. |
Nah, you have it wrong. It's really a Barbie simulator, where the players spend most of their time unlocking clothing items to make themselves look 'cool', with pvp on the side.
|
It may help if Q mentions the name changes he went through on Zeta Revised, and some of the history of the game. Post this writeup on your blog, and attract new customers the comments on this review may have turned away.
Best regards to you Quaddw. |
I play this game on my spare time, and it's pretty good. This review is decent , I think this review could be a lot more better, due to the fact that this game has many more features.

I dislike negative reviews. They just serve to discourage game developers from continuing to work on their games.

This Review missed another important feature besides the Unique PvP and Guild War system. It forgot that this game itself has been ripped countless times and that the rips games failed epicly , because they could not replicate what Q did. As for GamePlay, if you actually got to Lvl 200 and was able to Play with Full access to most of the game, you would see its better than most of the other DBZ Based games and NOT a rip. This Review is very Negative and is baseing its Strong Points on how "The Game has been offline for a long time" and "It doesnt have original content" . It doesnt matter if the game hasnt been Online/Had updates in a while or if its Turfs, Gfx, or Objects "look" ripped, maybe you should look, ask, and find out for yourself. This Review could do MUCH better.

Eh, the overall score should be 6 IMO. But whatever, a max score of 10 kinda sucks if you want to compare it to other games... Oh yeah, if Quaddw programmed a more balance combat system, added animations that were more realistic (Such as showing hand movements for ki. Attacks) than this game could potentially become the top byond anime.

In my honest opinion, this review isn't as bad as all of you complaining make it seem. A review is supposed to show both positive and negative aspects of the game. This lets the developer know what he he's doing well and what he needs to work on.

This lets the developer know what he he's doing well and what he needs to work on. I think the complaining stems more from the fact that ham doctor is falsely accusing the developers of stealing a good portion of the art. That, and that he did so instead of talking about the other features that make the game what it is. |
I fully stand by the comments I have made and will not apologize or retract any statements I have made on this game or the review of.
It isn't my objective to create a review in which everyone will agree with it, but present a review of the game from my own personal perspective. If you do not feel that my review is fair to the game, then feel free to review the game yourself. If the staff that run BYOND Anime feel that my review is unfair then they the right to remove the review at their own discretion. The owner himself admitted to using graphics from other places, he never denied that fact. The argument comes into question where they came from. At this point you people need to get over it. Once again, I feel it is more about the community that plays the game getting upset about negativity directed at the game. Thank you, have a nice day. |

I fully stand by the comments I have made and will not apologize or retract any statements I have made on this game or the review of. Not only did you use a very general and self righteous response, but you fail to notice that "You have disclosed certain aspects of the game including Guild (Guild Wars) , Pvp (Lvl 200) , And a Unique Race/Class System. These Aspects of DBZ Onslaught should be considered in your reveiw. It doesnt matter if you stick by your original opinions or decide to change it, Its not that the reveiw was Negative, but that it is missing key parts of the game that could change how you look at it. Like whats been said before by Magnesium & Q, the problem isnt with your Review, its how you said Onslaught harbored Ripped Content or Barely Edited Icons (Obj, Turfs, etc.) That is the source of the issue. So if you arent to LAZY to get to Lvl 200 or ASK Q or Magnesium on HOW They Obtained/Edited the Bases in the game, Then maybe you could rethink on how you reviewed the game. Again, it doesnt matter if its Positive or Negative, but shouldnt it have good reasons WHY its Postive or Negative. And shouldnt it be suppourted by HARD CORE FACTS That will make your "Review" stronger and have less 'Negative' Comments. -------V V V Once again, I feel it is more about the community that plays the game getting upset about negativity directed at the game. And WHY would the Staff at BYOND Anime feel like this is Unfair? Wouldnt you want them on your side and to see your reasons why you reveiwed the game as it is? ----V V If the staff that run BYOND Anime feel that my review is unfair then they the right to remove the review at their own discretion. And why would anyone Create a Review just to get people to like it or just to compete with you or JUST to give it a 'Better' Look over? There's NO Point. -------V V If you do not feel that my review is fair to the game, then feel free to review the game yourself. Your personal perspective needs to be reviewed =/ ------V V It isn't my object to create a review in which everyone will agree with it, but present a review of the game from my own personal perspective. And finally, you must be dumb if you think we want you to apologize or change your reveiw? Whats the point of making one if you have to change it because people preassure you? I would think that someone like you would be SMARTER And BETTER Than that. ------V V I fully stand by the comments I have made and will not apologize or retract any statements I have made on this game or the review of And i guess thats it. |
I did have a lot of fresh / new ideas for a new version of it, but lacked an artist to create original work.
