Exactly how do I host things locally these days? The box where I can change what port I'm hosting things on is always greyed out.

The ability to host games "privately" with others unable to join unless invited would be much appreciated too.

I want to try these games you have to download to play, but whenever I run one, others join the game and things get so bogged down I can't play anymore.

When you just run a game (even through the hub) it shouldn't open a network port. It will only do that when you use the Host... link, where you can also specify if you want to announce it on the hub. So you basically have three options here:

  • Run a world locally-- no one else can connect. The default option when you run a game.
  • Host a world, but don't tell anyone else the port and don't announce it on the hub. If your pager is off, no one should be able to join you unless you tell them the address and port.
  • Host a world and announce it on the hub, so anyone can connect.

    We'll add some more options in the future. I think we need a "clique" mode where your games are only announced to your friends. That would be most useful.

An implementation suggestion: Make it so you can classify a person in your pager list as a "friend". Then have a "friends" hosting option.

Note that I don't mean everyone in your pager list is a friend...only the ones you check off as being so.

Oh. But this is not what's happening. I'm not using the Host... link, and it's hosting my games anyway.

I'd just leave it with a single "friend" tag, and then you could still have four hosting options: Leave it open for anyone to connect to, leave it open just for people on your pager, leave it open just for people you specifically mark as "friend", and then strictly by private invitation only.

some peaple(like me) put aboslutly everyone i see online on my pager(for just incase i need to get ahold of them for any reason)

I'm not in windows right now, so I can't remember if this option is still visible in the DS options panel, but I believe your problem is the <code>default-port</code> configuration setting.

Just in case it is not visible in the DS options panel, I'll tell you the command-line way to edit it.

First of all, to see your current configuration settings enter the command "<code>.configure</code>". If <code>default-port</code> is there, it is probably 0 or some fixed number to be consistent with the behavior you are seeing.

The setting you want is "<code>auto</code>". To apply that, enter the command <nobr>"<code>.configure default-port auto</code>"</nobr>. In the old days, the easiest way to host games was to configure this to be some number such as 0 or 2000, so that is why you might have it that way. Now, it is better to always leave this as "auto" unless you have a special reason to do otherwise.

yeah but when you need to get ahold of someone but you forgot how to spell there name... youll be runnin to me for answers! (or you should i got them all on my pager..)
