Heh, about nothing important really. I was wondering, If we are all using BYOND, and BYOND gives us the capabilities to write programs (In a relatively small period of time) that allows us to chat with each other in real time, why do we bother with forums? I mean, don't get me wrong, forums are cool, since i can search back to 1923 when you still used a puch card to make byond understand what the map should look like, but why aren't there a multiplayer world where everyone can chat and ask their questions, and start debates, etc. And maybe someone can scan the logs every so often for some interesting stuff and write those articles i was talking about before. :)
[ Just some useless babble ]
Imagine this:
You start of in a world. To the left of where you started, you find 'Ye Olde school of BYOND programming'. This is where the newbies would go. Straight ahead you'll see 'The Orc and Whistle' where people can Babble over a mug of ale. etc., etc.
That would be nice. (For me at least)

A forum is something you can peruse at your leisure. It's sorted into posts and threads, not just a bunch of chat lines coming at you in no particular order. Chatting is great for by-the-minute discussion, but a chatroom/world is a lot less convenient when you're trying to participate in a discussion that you can't sit and devote large solid chunks of time to. |

I was just wondering. Now I know. :) And knowing is half the battle. (The other half is mostly just bayoneting people, but G.I. Joe never felt compelled to tell anyone that.) |

(The other half is mostly just bayoneting people, but G.I. Joe never felt compelled to tell anyone that.) Most people tend not to tell someone that they're going to bayonet them, after all. ;-) |

Stuff like what you discussed has been worked on before...but the reality is, if it weren't a web forum, I'd be getting work done right now. Um, I mean, I couldn't be posting right now.
You could do a combo BYOND world/web app, and I was once going to port my own ultra-cool BYOND forum code to do that...but then I decided to do what all lazy programmers should do: use what already exists. If most people will access the forum on the web anyway, and if there is already this web-based forum available, why do more work when I could make another game instead?
