(That's two L's, not one, for all you Americans out there who think otherwise. ;-)

Anyway, I spent a period of time a few months ago by building a list of medieval occupations, but never got around to releasing it.

It's a textfile with 205+ different occupations listed. (207, actually, but 205+ sounds bigger. ;-)

So, I'm releasing it. You can download/view it here. (Save Target As to download)

[Vocations.txt]

(I skipped 'prostitutes' out of principle. I probably could've gotten away without saying anything at all, but for some odd reason I had a nagging feeling someone would say 'What about prostitutes?'. So, now you know.)

I can see it now... 207 versions of 'Whats a thonger?' :)

Good work Spuzzum, but now you need to spend another 20+ hours describing exactly what these occupations mean...

"Hey there, fellow! My name's Archiban, what's yours?"

"Krathien. Who are you?"

"Hello, Krathien, nice to meet you. I'm no one special, just a passerby who's interested in meeting the locals. So, what's your purpose in this life?"

"I'm a joiner."

"Really? How interesting, what exactly does a joiner do?"

"Beats the dragon's snot out of me. I just got it from Spuzzum's Job Listings off the corner of Fairwinds Avenue."

"That's fascinating."

"Isn't it? Now get lost."

A shame, since there is a rich history of different kinds of prostitutes, and many cases of some influencing history.

For example, the dude who built the Parthenon had a "companion" after his wife died (I forget the exact term for her), who was so intelligent that he included her in all his conversations with other men so he could get her point of view.

This was quite a scandal, but he didn't care.

To me this sort of history completely destroys the "such-and-such was a man of his time so he thought women were useless" argument. If thousands of years ago the leader of the Greeks could figure out that a mere prostitute was smarter and more useful than any of the men around, then no one has had an excuse since!

Anyway I'm not making a statement about the morality of prostition, because to make a blanket treatment of prostitution isn't possible. I'd simply like to stick up for people who played an important part and might otherwise be left out of history...

I'm not ignoring the fact that they existed... or that, they were (and are) a fact of life and history. I'm just not listing it so people don't condone their inclusion into a game.

I mean, I can understand if a game has a prostitute. But having that as a selectable occupation is oh-so-taboo to me.

"I'm a joiner."

I thought I knew (something to do with carpentry and detail work with moulding and the like, I believe) but I now know I have no idea. I only heard of it as an occupation. Why am I no longer sure? Here's what the dictionary says:

joiner
- n
1) One who or that which joins.
2) U.S. Informal - One who joins many clubs, lodges, etc.

So, I guess a better question would be to ask what 'join' means.

join
- v.t.
1) To become a member of, as a club, party, staff, etc.
2) To come to as a companion or participant.
3) To unite in act or purpose.
4) To come to a junction with.
5) To connect.
6) To unite in marriage.
7) To take a place with, in, or among.
8) Informal - To adjoin.
- v.i.
9) To enter into association of agreement; often with 'with'
10) To take part, usually with 'in'.
11) To come together; connect; unite.
- "to join battle"
To engage in a battle or conflict.
- "to join up"
Informal - To enlist.
- n.
A joint or seam.

How informative! =P

Like I said, though, I believe it involves woodworking and working with building edges and moulding. It probably has something to do with the noun version of join.

As I should have stated, my lists aren't to be used as direct references. I did state that months ago but I can't expect people to remember that... Anyway, my lists are only meant as inspiration, not as a checklist of things you must include.

oh nooo.... i have an actual book that has all the skills and roll cheaks(Unoffical AD&D rules) for every "taboo" thing there is.. so if i do deside to add it to my game... i dont think emotes would cut it....

i hate to be the one to tell you... but you forgot King.

No problem. The 1st Edition AD&D DM's Guide has a great table to generate random harlots.

That book is amazing in so many ways... the density, variety, and insane wisdom of the information contained in it are (in my opinion) unmatched by any RPG book since.

No I didn't.

Noble.

I should add that a King is not an occupation, it is a position. A King is a Noble who has taken the throne.

Fireworks didn't actually become all too common in Europe for a long time; they were in Japan after the advent of gunpowder, which was later noticed to be useful as a potential weapon when a firework accidentally went off at the wrong angle and almost hit the Emperor's daughter.

But, it is a possibility because fireworks did exist in Japan, and were very rarely exported to Europe. (Medieval tends to imply European, which assumption I am making possibly invalidly.)

However, I'm not in the mood to adapt the list right now. =)
