...couldn't you think of anything better to call your Harvest Moon-style game than "Harvest Moon"? When you first mentioned in on the forum, I wanted to applaud your originality and initiative in making a new game inspired by a fairly unique and interesting example of a game in a very rare genre... but you're not even attempting originality.

Doesn't anyone understand the difference between taking something you like as inspiration, and simply ripping it off?

He... He's making a Harvest Moon game? Awww, crap, I was planning on doing that. Oh well, it probably would've been ages before I got around to it...

Go ahead and make it. What's 2 Harvest Moon games compared to the acres and acres of DBZ?

For some reason that sounds like the setup to a really lame joke.

To accentuate the point about being original, note that you could very well make a game that plays quite similarly to Harvest Moon but in fact bears absolutely no real resemblance. Maybe you're on an interplanetary space colony and you're harvesting space mold and radioactive crystals, or some other such theme other than boring modern-day Earth farming. Take a trip to Iowa sometime--trust me, farming's boring.

Not wanting to sound st00pid or anything, but what's Harvest Moon?

An extremely addictive Farming game for the Super Nintendo, made by Natsume. They then made a N64 port...

I'll find a site about HM, you'll see it's greatness.

Cinnom, you make a Harvest Moon game.. Not to sound rude or anything, but I think you could make a better one that Seto-Strife. I did enjoy Sonic Adventure by Seto-Strife, though.

Online Harvest Moon would be so sweet. Or an online Sims.. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.......... I can't wait for Sims Online.

I personally despise the game, but I will admit that it has an insanely cool game model.

Good point.
But I wonder how you could actually do the game. You could have multiple people working on the same farm, but then you get into questions about farm crowding, houses (bed sharing? ;), wives, etc. Any thoughts on that?

I thought the whole point of this thread was to speak out against the evils of simply ripping off every aspect of a game as opposed to taking a few basic game ideas from a unique and fun game and making another unique and even more fun game.

One horribly bad thing about it is the repetitiveness(sp?). It gets pretty boring after doing the same exact thing every day (days in the game). I guess that's why they put in a few holidays here in there.

Who says you can't have more than one conversation in a single thread? If it makes you happy, I'll make a new thread. ;)

I believe the distinguished un-Canadian gentleman was merely suggesting that this problem is only a problem if one adheres slavishly to the exact format of Harvest moon.

Oh, haha. Thanks for pointing that out, Lexy, I really didn't see that in his message.

I didn't plan on taking every aspect of the game. But I would include the special things that make it extra fun, like having wives. While doing that, I would include my own different things, like multiplayer ability (most obvious), buying pets instead of starting with one, and other things that I simply can't think of right now.

There obviously wouldn't be a point in taking the game and making an exact copy of it, but I still want to keep the main idea of the game (its a farm, you do stuff). If I were to make an exact copy, it would probably only end up crappier than the original.

Hey, here's a pretty original idea for it.
How abouts you are the great giver of life? You buy souls with some form of money (not really money, something), and place them in your life soil for them to grow into people, which get put in your people box to be sent to Earth. And instead of having livestock that produce milk and eggs, how about having spirits that will produce special kinds of fetilizer for your life soil?

What do you think so far? Original enough?

Hmm. Sounds like Harvest Moon with the appearance of things switched around. Still, that's enough to move it out of "ripoff" territory and into "clone", possibly even "spinoff" if you had a lot of feature changes.

Which is exactly what I'm aiming for. Let's face it, a game that's going to based on Harvest Moon obviously can't be much more than a clone, since that's exactly what it would be if I based it off of Harvest Moon. And If I didn't base it off of Harvest Moon so it wouldn't be a clone, that would destroy the whole purpose of making a game based off of Harvest Moon. Right? =)

Argh, IE ate my post.

I'll summarise. =P

My game TekForce is based heavily off of numerous game systems, most notable of which Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0. But, while it is based from those anonymous games, I don't consider it a clone by any means. The play style is different, the stats are different, the skills are different; everything is different. The only thing that really makes it somewhat similar to Cyberpunk is the actions your players can take are similar, since TekForce is much like Cyberpunk in atmosphere, albeit with my own Utopian twists added in to make you really wonder if being happy is such a good thing.

IE must find your posts pretty scrumptious. I guess all of mine are rotten or something, it never eats mine. Maybe I need to add some sugar or caffeine to them. =P

Well, it being based on Harvest Moon, I was planning on having very similal gameplay. Like how you buy seeds, plant them, let them grow, pluck them out of the ground, and throw them into your bin. But if I can think of a more interesting way of doing things, I'll be sure to try it. Thanks for your input.
