The total lack of originality. People are always looking for games to rip off and covert to byond's multiplayer mode. Multiplayer Mario, Multiplayer Zelda, Multiplayer this and that and never anything original! Why can't people stop ripping off other people's things and build something of their own for once! (Strangely, the only people who ever seem to do this are the people who actually know what they're doing...)
Yeah, I hear DBZ Super Sayian Gohans Revenge GT Saga SSJ Radditz Style Majininzed Version .00232D is nice.

So is Legend Of Zelda Online Version: Multiplayer Tactics!

I'm a little worried about the originality factor in my new game; it's based on an existing board game (and hence perfect for BYOND's multiplayer environment), but I intend for the rules to be a bit different; how different will depend on how well everything else works out. I was actually planning to combine some concepts from several similar games with vastly different rule structures, but so far simplicity seems to be steering me one way, and sooner or later I'm gonna have to steer away just so I don't end up making a clone of another game. My goal is to come out with something in the genre of these games but with a distinct flavor of its own.
Ironically, I really stink at playing these sorts of games. That should make designing an AI for computer players interesting.

I have found that designing an AI for a game is the perfect way to become better at playing it. You are forced to systematically work out a good approach to playing the game, which then gives you more mental tools for playing it.

Well, designing good AI, maybe. If you're like me you just have your AI pick a random option every turn.

Or have it pick out everyone with DBZ in there name and jump one of them at random.
The only thing that bothers me about the spate of fangames is my fear, founded or no, that people will be scared off BYOND because of all the DBZ. But while I certainly didn't copy any storylines, my games are mostly clones too. Sheep I is a Daleks clone, Sheep II is based on Pit Droids, Sheep III is a Rhodes clone, Lexiconomy is Acrophobia on a bad day, Runica is based on Mudcrack Y, Backgammon is, well, backgammon... only Sixes is an original idea.
And nobody ever plays that!

I would like to see more original games here (especially RPGs with their own original graphics). But to me, we and the DBZers are doing the same thing: making the games we want to play.

I'm on it, look under projects under "Sort by date" and you'll see "Blazers Quest" it's an RPG in the works with everything made 100% by me. My idea, my codes, my graphics, etc..
I don't mean to sound biased or anything, but there is a difference in this.

Taking a game that was designed to be multiplayer, without any plot or story to it is one thing. Taking chess and making Chess Online is logical, because it makes it more convenient for people to play together.

Taking a game that was designed for single player, with plot and story is another. Taking Zelda and making Zelda online isn't it making it any more convenient to play. It ruins any kind of plot that the original Zelda had, and ruins any story as well. Having a player-run world tends to do that.

Games like Zelda are better off left alone and replaced with original concepts for multiplayer. While board game types are designed for multiplayer, so their original concept works perfectly.

Stealing credit for them is another matter though. ;oP

I don't make multiplayer games with byond because I'm mainly into Zelda like games, and those games would suck with more than one person.
Well I'm doing my part here. I love RPGs so I'm making my own RPG all the code is my own, but I may borrow a few good concepts here and there, and surprise you with some new ones of my own. The graphics for the most part all all mine, all %100 original. The theme is something I have a passion for and know quite a lot about, so I choose it so I would not loose interest. And its the 1st of it's kind type of game that I know of. Gameplay is closer to Ultima Online like, RPG or Economy based gameplay or you can try both. Also its a huge multiplayer game, thats taking as much time to logically organize how I'm going to relate everything as it is to code and make graphics for.

I over hauled all the mob code and am now doing some major work in that area, but if you see my game host check it out. As it grows and I add more functionality its sure to become a hit and adictive.

My game's name is, "Kemet".

There's a difference between taking classic game structures and playing with them, and making DBZ #422.3.

Ultimately, as with any form of art, there are only so many underlying structures out there, and everyone steals from everything.

It's a question of what you do with it, and how you use it to create something somewhat new in the world.

You could say that DragonSnot is just Pipe Dream, but it wouldn't be true at all. Pipe Dream was a starting inspiration, but DragonSnot is its whole own game. The Matrix and other sources were an inspiration for L&D, but the result is not quite like anything else out there I think.

Etc.
I agree with you somewhat, although I find on certain days when I want mindless (and I mean mindless) gameplay I can play a few of the dbz games, although most are terrible. Dragon Warrior Online is probably not only the most popular, but deepest, most fun and overall best game on byond right now, even though it is a fan game. Especially with the addition of the new tower, the level design is genius. I heard that the game's creator, SilkWizard is making an original game with original graphics and everything, so maybe that will be just as fun and certain people won't have a problem with it because it won't be a fan game. Overall, I think that fan games have a bad rep because so many crappy programmers make fan games instead of original games.

Yes Dragon Snot is smilier in gameplay to Pipe Dream but not a copy because it has many diffrent aspects to it, I never had a chance to play L&D so I can't really compair that to anything.

Hopefully that will change soon! We are about 95% of the way to our Alpha release of the new version.

In DDT terms, that can mean anything, though.
In response to Deadron
Yes I've heard that 95% in the DDT can still be months from 100%. But Dragon Snot is one of the few games I play on a daily basis, these puzzle type byond games can be very addctive! Keep up the good work over there at DDT :).

There might be some truth that there's not very much at all left to be totally original with. Fortunately, game design has two things going for it yet:

1. Not everyone has seen everything, so not only can you still come up with plenty of great ideas independently (even if they've been done before), but you've got a good chance that your players won't know your inspiration for a given game.

2. There are still lots of completely original permutations of well-used ideas. Just because you're using the exact same range of the color spectrum that has been used for painting since its inception, doesn't mean you can't paint something unique.

Heh. I'm gonna have to implement one of those DBZ name blockers, just because their type is unlikely to stay long enough to properly test the game once I go into a testing phase anyway.

Yeah, I have one on my game but since it's single player it won't come in handy till the game is released. The best part of my code this this:
alert("Your name sucks get out of my game or make a new key!")
del(src)

Gotta love it!

What about people that enjoy the Zelda world and would like to roleplay their own characters in it? In that case, making it online does serve a purpose. (I, however, doubt that any of the people making Zelda games will actually do that, but the point stands)

Not that it matters, though. Nintendo does police the Zelda name. It shut down an a game called Zelda Online a few years back, which changed its name and all of its graphics to become Graal.
