Character Classes

I'm just added NPC's that you can battle to Shining Multiplayer and should have a working version of it (still a few bugs to iron out) by the end of the day.

The next phase will be to allow character classes where you can choose what characters you want to start with and what class they will be. I suppose job might be a better description because you will be able to change it.

The game is set in a mideival fantasy setting and I've been trying to think of some jobs/classes to add. Here's the basics of what I hope to add:

Fighter
Soldier //well rounded generic fighter
Ninja //relies on agility rather than strength
Knight //higher defense
Mage
Sorcerer //*Summoning Spells and enchantments
//Only summon to attack, like in Final Fantasy
Wizard //Elemental spells like Blaze, Freeze, ect.
Healer
Cleric //pure healer/magic user
Monk //fighting healer
Scout //maybe can walk through mountains and is fast

Any other suggestions or comments? Unfortunately I can't do classes like thieves because items aren't in the game yet and they won't be for a while. These different classes will basically effect which stats raise and which spells can be learnt. Each character will have a base class that will always effect them, these are more secondary classes.

just so you know FF 9 and 10 you sommon tell there dead. I know FFX is thats way and i think FF 9 is. Well add like under fighter: Knight, swordsman, Maceman. That way you can lemit how much power in each class the usr can get.

I think he means the real Final Fantasy games, not these latest financial milkers. =P

HEY! FFX is the best FF so far. Lay off buster! hehe :]

As for English, I like the name Mage better than Wizard. Wizard makes 'em sound really old. lol

anyway, just a thought.

No way! The SNES versions of it were by far the best! An RPG isn't really an RPG unless it's 2D.

Hmm.. Gotta agree with you there.. I like FF2 on SNES, FF8 on PS, and FFX on PS2 the best.. *drools*.. But im stuck on FFX... Damn Spectral Keeper!!..

Mage? Eww.... I never did like the sound of that. Wizard sounds much more colorful.

Mage is derived from Latin magus which in turn comes from the Old Persian magus which was amember of the Zoroastrian priestly caste of the Medes and Persians. The Greeks (and Romans in turn) adopted it to mean generally any sorceror. (Simon Magus was a pagan sorceror in the Bible who attempted to best Paul and Peter through magic.)

Wizard comes from Middle English wisard which is wise plus the perjoratives -ard. In other words, one who is wise.

Sorceror comes to us from the Latin sortirius (by way of French) which if from Latin sort- or sors meaning fortune, fate, etc.

I've always been particularly fond of the title of warlock which is from Old English waerloga (oath-breaker). Conversely, magician to me invokes sleight of hand rather than the occult (perhaps why I dislike mage as well).

As to some possible classes, how's this:

  • Barbarian- Powerhouse class. Strong offense and resistance to damage. Can use most weapons and armor. Vulnerable to non-damaging magic. May go into a rage.
  • Bard- Multi-purpose vagabond. Good agility, decent magic, fair range of weapons and armor (mostly light). Magic is mainly illusory/charming. Relatively poor in toe-to-toe combat.
  • Druid- Nature-based spellcaster. Marginal combat ability. Fair equipment selection. Broad magic base- summoning/enhancement/protective/healing/offensive. Lacks focus in any particular type of magic.
  • Knight- Swordsman of faith. Good combat skills combined with limited faith based magic. Primarilly skilled in swordplay, but can use other weaponry.(Crusader?)
  • Priest- Defensive healer. Marginal combat skills. Poor selection of arms and armor. Skilled at defensive/healing/warding magic. Offensive magic against demons and the undead. Does poorly without assistance but is invaluable for support.
  • Ranger- Stealthy skirmisher. Good all around fighter. Uses most arms, light armor. Excellent archer and can often avoid detection.
  • Sorceror- Enhancement specialist. Marginal combat ability and equipment selection. Powerful defense/enhancement magic. Does poorly without assistance but is invaluable for support.
  • Thief- Rogue infiltrator. Fair combat ability. Restricted to lighter weapons and armor. Very agile. Can steal equipment and bypass wards/locks/traps. Can often avoid detection. (Assassin may sound better)
  • Warrior- General purpose combatant. Uses all weapons and armor. Fast, strong, and tough. No special abilities or magical aptitude.
  • Warlock- Demon summoner. Marginal combat skills and equipment. Powerful summoning and warding spells. May have limited enhancement magic. (Similar templates for necromancer except undead instead of demons and offensive magic instead of enhancement, shaman- spirits and protection/healing)
  • Wizard- Offensive spellcaster. Poor combat skills and weapon/armor selection. Powerful offensive and transportation magic. Limited protective/enhancement magic.

My favourite name for a wizard of any kind is "necromancer" -- not because I'm a grim person (I'm not, and I usually despise anyone who chooses a necromancer as their character class), but because it flows so well over the tongue and it sounds pagan. I mean, it's one thing to have something pagan -- it's another to have it sound pagan. No, I'm not trying to say pagan a lot. I'm just using the word pagan because pagan is the best way to describe a pagan character class. You can't label me as pagan for doing that, can you?

Yes, of course I can :p

Anyway, I'm going to have a Base class such as Mage which will limit the classes you can take. A mage couldn't be a soldier for example but could be a sorcerer, necromancer, priest, and maybe even scout. So I still need a generic name for Non-Healing Magic User.

Non-Healing Magic User -- I'd say either a mindcrafter or an enchanter.

Wrong, FFX only, not FFIX. Also, heard they are making a FFXI that is a MMORPG? no, not kidding, I havn't tried reading the official site yet (studying japanese) but its at www.playonline.com/FF11/home/index .looks awesome(I'm gonna be a Red Mage to start as)

Oooh, necromancer. Always a personal favorite. There's just something about a legion of shambling dead at your command that's so... invigorating! Plus if played "correctly", they can be most mysterious, just the thing to seduce that pale goth vampire chick you've had your eye on!

No one plays characters correctly, but that's because not everyone is a heartthrob Romeo.

All forms of "evil" characters are usually spectacularly handsome and beautiful in the vast majority of folklore -- the haggish witch is a medieval "twist" to prevent sympathy for the people they hanged. "If they're beautiful, they must be a witch!" The general philosophy isn't far removed -- if a woman is jealous of another woman, just preach heresy and she is removed.

I frequently play necros, as they are fun. Plus, I end all my character names with 'ron', and I love my necro Nomicron.
