Some people just take everything too seriously, then think they're more mature than everyone else. I was in the middle of writing a much longer message about this when IE crashed, and I don't feel like typing it out again, so there ya go. Feel free to reply. If you have a problem with me, feel free to bring it up.

Just one question. Does having the nerve to say, "I like monkeys!" make one mature?

Not just that so many people on here are immature... But so many people think its so funny to say and do the dumbest stuff on here and it just proves how immature they are.
But one thing that also proves immaturity is saying that just because someone is a teenager on here, that the're immature. I'm only 14 and I act way more mature that most of the population on here. |

Personally, I think the mature people like to say the "dumb stuff" (depends what dumb stuff you mean, actually) because while they're online, on the forums, that's their time off from the otherwise strict reality that most "mature" people get stuck in eventually. On the other hand, the immature people are the ones who try hard to act mature so they can impress the other people and "fit in" or something. They're usually the ones who act over-mature and take everything too seriously. As a side note, I need to find some more dumb stuff to post on The Monkey's Corner at http://byond.digitalmouse.org, otherwise Sariat's forum might end up with more posts. Any ideas?? |

what is the actual definition of mature anyways? Isn't it when you feel you have achieved the point of whatever it is you're wanting to improve to the point you want it to be at?
Somewhere along those lines? I forget anyways :) I'm sure the definition of mature as been changed by society though in some way it was not ment to be used... |

I'm not sure about the dictionary definition but I always thought of it as thinking before you speak or act. By thinking I mean pondering if your action/words will accomplish the goal you hope to accomplish without a large amount of negative side effects.
Meaning, cussing at someone because they accidently caused you to trip and scrape your knee would make them feel negatively towards you while not helping your knee in anyway so it would be immature. Of course that definition probably isn't broad enough but it's the best I can think of... |

The best Encarta defenition I can pick out is: "showing qualities gained by development and experience."
That's about it. So, by that one could conclude that being an idiot ("showing a lack of good sense or intelligence") is a sign of immaturity. |

If you have a problem with me, feel free to bring it up. I agree that some people take things too seriously, but on the flip side of that coin, many many more don't take things seriously enough. I've often found it's a hallmark of immaturity that certain people downplay the feelings of others, or the consequences of an act (including the long term) to the point where they can't recognize why anyone would have a problem with it. For example: Spamming in a game. This is just obnoxious; it scrolls up the view so people have a hard time reading game text; it makes it hard to communicate; and it says nothing (or sometimes, says something vulgar). People who think others overreact to this aren't thinking through the damage it will cause, or the causes of others' annoyance with it. I can't tell you the number of times some punk troll has told me "You people are too serious." I take my hatred of Sugar Ray too seriously. I think I'm right where I should be in my disapproval of things like spam. Lummox JR |

I don't see what is the point in worrying about "maturity" and everyone elses maturity. |

Well, the "screw maturity" part aside, most people just act like themselves. It's just the people who "try" to be mature that he's talking about.

Should they just try to be "who they are" then? |

Yeap. What I mean about dumb stuff is not jokes or something (Sometimes I like a good dumb joke, sometimes they are the funniest kind :P), but more along the lines of lets say, going into a game and saying it sucks because you like a different game more or maybe for other reasons such as people saying a game sucks cause it is someones first game. Also sensless spammers(Wich can be controled to an amount with some coding) but its still annoying. Another is people lying about thier age. I don't lie about mine. I once had a person come into a game and say that shes a 24 year old story writer, while she spammed and said it sucked for no reason (Wich basicly showed that she was a bit on the way immature side for a 24 year old.) Another thing is when people come into places and say stuff like: "This F***ing piece of s**t is f***ing pissing me the f**k off!!! -- This can be understandable at times, don't get me wrong :P ,But when the're saying it constantly for the sake of trying to be "cool" that showes immaturaty too. Those are just a few of the things I find immature that I see creeping around BYOND a bit to much.

I totally agree. Annoying behavior should be delt with seriously, whether they like it or not, they brought it on themselves. If someone starts to be the least bit annoying in my game, if I can tell that they are doing it to annoy others, i go to this, my little 2 strike (3 strikes is to many chances to give them, for me anyways.) rule:
If you annoy people and they tell you to stop, and you don't, thats 1 strike. If I tell you to stop, and you don't, thats strike 2. And in a snap your banned from that server permanantly. |
Through e-forensic textual analysis, I'll try to reconstruct the rest of the longer message:
"Then again, some people don't take anything seriously, but think they're as mature as anyone else. And then there are people who take things moderately seriously, and think they're slightly less mature than most people, when actually they're somewhat more mature than most people. On the other hand, sometimes you find people who take things with exactly the right amount of seriousness, and they think they're more mature than many people, but not all. There is only one common thread linking these disparate groups of people: they're all out of bubble gum. Therefore, I hereby grant Power of Attorney over my BYOND account and all my BYONDimes to Gughunter. The End."
Is that close?
